Yugoslavia were finally no longer represented after 2003, when Serbia and Montenegro renamed the country, and team.

Now split into Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Macedonia respectively, each team have notable world-class players, but not enough to be a real title challenger on the international stage.

However, if imagine a Yugoslavia today if we hand select a current Yugoslavian team, with players eligible from the six nations, we’d have an exceptionally strong national squad.

'Yugoslavian' national team XI:

Goalkeeper: Samir Handanovic (Slovenia & Inter Milan)

Defenders: Ivan Peresic (Croatia & Wolfsburg), Branislav Ivanovic (Serbia & Chelsea), Neven Subotic (Serbia & Borussia Dortmund), Aleksander Kolarov (Serbia & Manchester City)

Midfielders: Luka Modric (Croatia & Real Madrid), Goran Pandev (Macedonia & Napoli), Adem Ljajic (Serbia & Fiorentina)

Forwards: Edin Dzeko (Bosnia and Herzegovina & Manchester City), Stevan Jovetic (Montenegro & Fiorentina), Mario Mandzukic (Croatia & Bayern Munich)

Substitutes: Asmir Begovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina & Stoke City), Matija Nastasic (Serbia & Manchester City), Mirko Vucinic (Montenegro & Juventus)
