how can you people even entertain the notion that macroeconomic data has any validity in the real world? look at this term "unemployment". it's an aggregate of the conditions of millions of completely disparate individuals in totally unique situations - it can't be aggregated. macroeconomic data is the worst kind of collectivisation, since it is hypocritically enforced by the liberal state in the name of staving off collectivisation.

In the past liberal states imposed standardization in measurement in order to enforce a more robust system of property rights and contract. The Quebra Quilos ("break the scales") revolt in Brazil was a three month long uprising against the government's imposition of the metric system, which the peasants believed was a Masonic plot.

What kind of economic world would we live in if we still measured by the medieval ell or furlong? It would upend basic assumptions about what it is for something to be equal to another thing.

So what is the essence of this Austrian story? Basically, it says that what we call an economic boom is actually something like China's disastrous Great Leap Forward, which led to a temporary surge in consumption but only at the expense of degradation of the country's underlying productive capacity. And the unemployment that follows is a result of that degradation: there's simply nothing useful for the unemployed workers to do. I like this story, and there are probably other cases besides China 1958–1961 to which it applies. But what reason do we have to think that it has anything to do with the business cycles we actually see in market economies?

im reading the "dark enlightenment" thing linked to in mainforum and its pretty interesting, as one poster put it, as a perfect antithesis of leftism. one thing i've noticed about the MRA/race-realist/war on christmas/randian types - summed up brilliantly in that piece as the "neo-reactionaries" - is that if, as nietzche put it, slave morality is re-sentiment, revaluing what which the master values, then the neoreactionary engages in re-re-sentiment; he revalues that which the slave values, that is to say, its status as the victimized and oppressed party
