i think that the absence of any kind of real accessible mental health services and basic support for fundamental human needs in the USA is an atrocity and that the irony stalinist shitpost forum had people who cared and tried to help. gussri didn't have to wind up this way, could have got treatment and maybe come out more or less ok but unfortunately none of that was realistically within our power to affect. that's heartbreaking. the efforts to help were doomed but i think it's wrong to assign any blame to those who tried to reach out.

i think a big part of the slowness to act decisively in the past, at least on my part, comes from the power structures here being very informal. there isn't really any kind established norm about what admins can or should act on unilaterally without building a community consensus first. i personally felt an obligation to try interceding with gussri first even though i obviously wasn't at all equipped to do that and lost my temper, not my proudest moment.

in the future i will probably just go with my gut and immediately exorcise anyone who clearly has a negative relationship with the forums that is hurting their mental health and threatening people, the worst that happens if i make a bad call is everyone yells at me a bunch and the decision gets reversed. like that hilarious time i wasn't paying attention and made some random reddit noob a mod. that was fine.

i'm going to be making a whole bunch of threads for conversations about stuff like this Very Soonfully once i have everything i need to get started, which was supposed to be two months ago, so surely any day now,

as sv mentioned the approach has generally been responsive to individual/private dialogue and to perceived community consensus (or at least leaving space for it to emerge). this means mod response is slower and sometimes we get it very wrong.

we've had a lot of posters come thru here, good and bad, facing tough mental health challenges, and account creation has for a long time been limited for this very reason.

as per cars suggestion, probably best to further discuss these topics on private subforum and not twitter quaratine thread.
