i remember back in the early 00s i would often see writing on a bathroom stall wall that featured the same two or three styles of handwriting going back and forth arguing about something, and thus concluded this must have been the original form of the internet message board. with the proliferation of smartphones, i have anecdotally observed a decline in toilet wall scrawls

Egg-carrying Alaskan salmon are dying because the water in Alaska is too hot. If you won't think of society's ills, at least think of our dentist bills!

The Folha de S. Paulo reported on August 14 that farmers around the BR-163, in southwestern Pará, had announced on 10 "day of fire." In the following hours, INPE recorded an explosion of fire outbreaks in the region. Acre has declared a state of environmental alert for the increase in the number of fires in the state.

https://heliogen.com/ has a demo plant for solar-thermal with secret sauce of closed-loop mirror focus control... reason this is really good news is, solar thermal today maxes out around 600C, but you can't do much w/ 600C except extract work in a heat engine. at higher temps, like their 1000C today and 1500C tomorrow, well at around 2500C, water splits into hydrogen + oxygen spontaneously, the reaction equilibrium flips sides. but even approaching the equilibrium temp, required energy input to drive the reaction over equilibrium, drastically decreases. 1000-1500C is useful for concrete production (~10% of emissions iirc) and other reactions, which had till now no substitute except natural gas fired heaters. the max temp solar thermal can achieve is the temperature of the sun's surface. even if the purpose is just driving heat engines, the carnot efficiency of an engine is ( T(hot) - T(ambient) ) / T(hot), you can plug values in and see the efficiency climb as T(hot) rises. it's crazy if the secret is just closed-loop mirror control, because you could potentially do that in a backyard setup with enough tuning.

imagine you are explaining closed loop mirror control to a moron
#498
it's like if someone gave us a laser pointer and was like, now point it up there, at that helicopter... open loop is like trying to fuck with the pilot, while blindfolded & have ear plugs in. closed loop is getting to use eyes & ears, to see where the red dot lands, & adjust aim. it just means instant feedback.

press release with actual technical details: https://www.geekwire.com/2019/company-backed-bill-gates-claims-breakthrough-concentrated-solar-energy-promising-replace-fossil-fuels-industrial-plants/

so it's an incremental improvement over existing concentrated solar tech that utilizes bitcoin and fortnite machines to better orient the mirrors for a tighter beam focus. pretty neat but ill just keep my bitcoins tyvm

With the easing restriction here fast food places has opened up but Domino's is forbidden from offering cheesy crust because it requires people standing side by side in the kitchen to produce. So my answer is Domino's cheesy crust.

it is the eve of the end of amerika - everything will crumble into millions of barely recognizable pieces. i am ecstatic. i want amerika to die. state lines blurring into nothing, 40% of everyone has an empty schedule, and water is running out. people get violent with nothing to do and no support. i will miss nothing. i want to watch the highways fold in on themselves all at once, every interstate vanishing immediately into the earth. it was a mistake to ever build them in the first place. free from the burden of the amerikan policies of death and encroachment, bedbugs and cockroaches will build an all-encompassing maglev rail system here before any government will, connecting their colonies more effectively than any infrastructure ever conceived in this god damned kountry. the malls are all burning. drive-in movie theaters will converted into a single-system of hospitals and graveyards. one stop shopping never looked so good. buried in cardboard, everything rots quickly. i think about what i will miss and come up as blank as the side of the freeways in indiana, ohio, pennsylvania, michigan, nevada, utah, texas, oklahoma, georgia, north and south carolina, north and south dakota, illinois, iowa, etc... the semen that spawned amerika was mostly just blood - it never materialized into something more than a cartoon. fire everywhere, what is there to miss? a prefab plastic house with an underground irrigation system? a gas station with touch screen point-of-sales? a banana republik? a loaf of sugar bread with fake flour? a field of soy? a school infested with lice, roaches, rats, and weapons? a krakkker barrel? i only draw blank. there is nothing to miss here besides life, but life here is built from burden, so is it really worth missing? i will miss a memory of a carnival where everything cost too much money! Five shitting dollars for a dart and ferris wheel! public goods! enamor us! i want to be entertained! give me something to miss!

I'll miss having a nice drive on a pretty day, stopping at some park or something, having a nice walk, then having a nice drive back.
