Moreover, now that eastern Ghouta has finally been cleared of terrorists, it turns out that Nato troops, including British troops, had surreptitiously been stationed in the area in preparation for an assault on Damascus. This assault was, in the event, frustrated when the Syrian government succeeded in liberating the area within only a few weeks from starting its offensive.

“According to a report by Al-Mayadeen news channel cited by Fars news, a number of British troops have been captured during the Syrian Arab Army’s operations in eastern Ghouta.

“They are believed to be a part of international military forces deployed in the region to launch a ground assault in Damascus in cooperation with the US. According to the report, the US and other Nato countries, Jordan and Israel planned to launch attacks from several fronts, but the plot failed as Syrian armed forces made a series of rapid advances in eastern Ghouta in March.

“The plot allegedly involved massive airstrikes by US and Israeli planes that were supposed to pave the way for ground forces …

“Since the plot failed due to rapid advances by the Syrian army, the US cancelled all operations planned for these foreign forces and ordered an immediate withdrawal from eastern Ghouta through the eastern suburbs of Damascus, including Douma.

“The US and Turkey sought to rescue foreign ‘militants and agents operating for Israel, Jordan and Nato’, now trapped in Ghouta, and move them to Idlib, the source says.

“The Turkish initiative to help with the evacuation of al-Nusra Front terrorists from Ghouta has reportedly been a cover-up for ‘special foreign forces that were among the ranks of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated’ Nusra Front terror organisation.

“‘Therefore, the US has ordered Jaysh al-Islam, Faylaq al-Rahman and other terrorist groups to allow the evacuation of civilians from eastern Ghouta to army-held regions in a bid to provide the ground for these foreign agents to also leave Ghouta in disguise, and enable the Turkish intelligence service to send them to specified regions in At-Tanf and northern Syria which are under the control of US troops,’ the source said.” (Syrian army captures British militants in eastern Ghouta – reports, Sputnik, 12 April 2018)

It would seem, however, that somebody forgot to tell the British troops, who remained in eastern Ghouta to be captured and thus give the whole game away.

Chemical weapons team in Syria kept from alleged attack site

DOUMA, Syria (AP) — Syrian and Russian authorities prevented independent investigators from going to the scene of a suspected chemical attack, the head of the chemical watchdog group said Monday, blocking international efforts to establish what happened and who was to blame.

The U.S. and France say they have evidence that poison gas was used in the April 7 attack in the opposition-held town of Douma, killing dozens of people, and that Syrian President Bashar Assad’s military was behind it.

But they have made none of that evidence public, even after they, along with Britain, bombarded sites they said were linked to Syria’s chemical weapons program.

Syria and its ally Russia deny any chemical attack took place, and Russian officials went even further, accusing Britain of staging a “fake” chemical attack. British Prime Minister Theresa May accused the two countries — whose forces now control the town east of Damascus — of trying to cover up evidence.

The lack of access to Douma by inspectors from the watchdog group, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, has left unanswered questions about the attack.

OPCW Director-General Ahmet Uzumcu said Syrian and Russian officials cited “pending security issues” in keeping its inspectors from reaching Douma.

“The team has not yet deployed to Douma,” Uzumcu told an executive council meeting of the OPCW in The Hague.

Instead, Syrian authorities offered them 22 people to interview as witnesses, he said, adding that he hoped “all necessary arrangements will be made ... to allow the team to deploy to Douma as soon as possible.”

So... the area is unsafe after the airstrikes and the inspectors have been asked to wait briefly while it's secured? But this is apparently a tactic by Russia & Syria to delay the inspections they themselves requested. The next bit is even better though

The Associated Press, during a government-organized visit Monday to Douma, spoke to survivors and witnesses who described being hit by gas. Several said a strange smell started spreading and people screamed, “It’s chlorine! It’s chlorine!”

The AP visited a two-room underground shelter where Khaled Mahmoud Nuseir said 47 people were killed, including his pregnant wife and two daughters, 18-month-old Qamar and 2 1/2-year-old Nour. A strange smell lingered, nine days after the attack.

Nuseir, 25, said he ran from the shelter to a nearby clinic and fainted. After he was revived, he returned to the shelter and found his wife and daughters dead, with foam coming from their mouths.

He and two other residents accused the rebel Army of Islam of carrying out the attack. As they spoke, government troops were not far away but out of earshot. Nuseir said a gas cylinder was found leaking the poison gas, adding that he didn’t think it was dropped from the air because it still looked intact.

Hahahah so residents are saying the rebels did it but it's implied they're lying? Fuck outta here

it should be obvious to anyone that if you have a large broad base anti war movement which is politically all over the place, like the stop the war coalition during the iraq war, that presents even the slightest threat to profit and imperialist war plans then it will be infiltrated to fuck with cops. then when that movement collapses and fades down to a tiny core of die hards the only people left in that core through the years of innaction are those who are being paid to be there, the cops. They dont even all need to be real cops, all they need is some front organisation to approach them and say they want to give them a grant for their great videos about assad the monster, keep up the good work. the org is reborn a cop org

i was at the answer/psl protest at the white house. it was small, a few dozen people, near the semi-permanent "free tibet" stand and occasionally being interrupted by a lone competing proselytizing guy whose topic was jesus and abortions or something. becker spoke and so did some other answer people, and partners from code pink, veterans for peace, etc. a young syrian lady named rema too. everyone was pretty good at this, it was just disappointingly small because of how complacent the american public is about the non-war at home type of war that empire wages these days

was peeking into SA and syria discussion has changed a little; there's still the old ravening neocon middle east thread in d&d, but now there's also a thread in c-spam where the dominant mood is "we accept that the fascist syrian govt has won and that further intervention is bad, but lol @ assadist tankies." so basically the discursive options are the brown moses line or the thug lessons line

anyway my question is, what's the deal with thug lessons

PSL+ANSWER DC actions would likely be better attended if they joined UNAC, which has the correct politics on imperialism and many constituent orgs in VA, instead of constantly trying to start their own front groups and solo demos. or if they did outreach into the majority black city theyre based in

I like reading his twitter because he is deep into all these corner-case inter-radical debates so he'll rail against these very specific small groups i haven't paid any attention to since i was in high school, he's like "we must stop the anarcho primitivist takeover of the left!" and i'm like oh wow those people still exist?? i think of it like a look into a possible future where the only politics on earth are like that

i feel a little bad for criticizing it, because it is important and good, but the Fisk article seemed a bit shallow. considering he just kind of did a drive-by drop-off of a complete contradiction of the main western narrative, it seems like it could have used a few more things than "i talked to Dr Some Guy and also i asked around and nobody would say anything out loud about chemicals so idk".

e.g. is foaming at the mouth an actual symptom of hypoxia?
don't gases which displace air cause hypoxia?

maybe that part of things is Not His Job, though (or perhaps anything more corroborated would not have been published, probably this)

The interesting thing is the blackmail behind this, that being if if you even just entertain alternative explanations you're worshiping a dictator. It's not only you have to support the rebels, you have to believe them as well, always.

Was Assad any less of a war criminal when members of his notorious mukhabarat were repeatedly whipping Maher Arar with electrical cables in 2003, at the behest of the U.S. government and long before the Arab Spring kicked off in 2011? The Syrian president was an eager accomplice in the Bush administration’s “extraordinary rendition” program, and Syria became one of the “most common” destinations for rendered suspects. To quote former CIA agent Robert Baer: “If you want a serious interrogation, you send a prisoner to Jordan. If you want them to be tortured, you send them to Syria.”

The monster Bashar al-Assad and the people of Syria must be held accountable for the heinous crimes of the United States of America, checkmate anti-interventionists!

#2227
Imagine being so far gone that you earnestly feel moral superiority shilling for the USA to annihilate a country for the crime of cooperation with the USA, and it doesn't even raise a little tingle of cognitive dissonance.

Actually hold on a minute, I think this guy's on to something. Maybe the United States of America should destroy every state that has committed the crime of cooperation with the USA, starting from the most cooperative and working its way down. I have a convenient list of 50 to start with,
