what's actually funny is that noone has actually ever experienced a cold shower... that's right, former Herman's Hermit's singer Peter Noone never ONCE had a truly cold shower in his life.

unfortun\ately, he died early last year in canada during a reunion tour of HErman's Hermits. but i feel like he would have wanted us to at least recognize the fact that his Hermits were more than some mere pop schmop riding on the beatles coattails forgettable whisp of a music group, but were much more, and, as evidence, i meekly and with more than a little fartiness submit what, for me, was always one of their more moving and pretty songs, which i will link right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3QzwazfM9g

The "Left" is in decline because of the very sort of ideas which you espouse. You speak of the same solutions which the capitalists speak, albeit with a different economic model, different social modes, all of which are somewhere on the horizon of progress. Statements like that; which declare categorically that sacrifice is out of the question, which frame the revolutionary project as a 'progression,' are the ones which work to destroy the dream of the left. Progression from what? To what? You say we should march forward, never considering - or leaving as a last resort for a dying earth - even the thought of changing our basic way of life, but stubbornly insisting that they to can 'have what we have,' the very same words used to sell neoliberalism.

Do you not see that inequality, the not having of others, springs from your having, is relative to your having, only exists in relation to your having? You, as a first worlder with your abundance of resources. This is not "the 1%," this is you. All of the first world will have to sacrifice many things it holds dear. 'Yes, I would like the oppressed of the worlds to have better lives,' you say to those who within earshot and are not repelled by your stench, but these words are overcome by your shouts, your pleas that you might retain your dear lifestyle. "But I want to live to be over 50," you cry! "But I want my daughter to be taught to read!" "But I want to take hot showers every day!" So much that even the thought of giving up the tiniest luxury, even the thought of a cold shower in the morning to start your day, leads you to launch immediately into a desperate attempt to defend and justify your luxury, your privilege. To defend that which is so dear to you that you will make sweeping generalizations about the "Left" and bringing down those whose beliefs are much the same as yours is in a flailing attempt to protect your privilege.

lol yeah because there's no grey area between 'destroy all water heaters' and 'hey maybe we shouldn't / couldn't in a post-capitalist world have things like hot showers and etc... all the time'

my favourite thing to do is lay down in the tub and let the hot shower water pour over me until i fall asleep. one hour showers? one hour and fifteen minute showers? such times, and more, become truly possible when the gentle pattering of water is loud enough to drown out your snores.

ah! the only way i can even sleep anymore!

lol @ my old office building in grad skoool we had a situation just like that. you see, in June/July/August, the building's central thermometer broke such that the air conditioner would only ever run at full blast or not at all. why they didn't turn it off manually every once in awhile, i dont know, but i do know that the reason they didnt fix it was because they didnt have the budget, having spent it on moving expenses to a new building that also turned out to have a broken air conditioner. the temperature in the building would be thus held at a constant 52 degrees fahrenheit. made that hour long hot shower at the end of the day sweet bliss, lemme tell ya... anyways, in my office, we brought coats and sweaters to wear, until i got the idea to bring in a couple of space heaters, which worked to bring the average temperature to about 61-62 or so...

radical temperature fluctuation creates porous seepage. rigidity denotes structure, and egoic skin can withstand irregularity within the thermitic terminal space, with enough heatsinking medals applied to intended process of application.

now let me inform you that colloidal silver makes a superior additive to thermal paste. aluminum oxide may make the heartless sick, but with a tin funnel, hot air can vent through the chimney, dissipating a crippling case of threshhold lead toxicity caused by iridescent technicolor-reactant silver facepaint provided by the cowardly mgm lab techs.

This is dumb and false. Sorry broski. The fact that I use hot water in my shower does nothing to deny a hot shower from someone in the Central African Republic or the rest of the third world. The only way you could make the argument was if hot showers were so energy intensive as to collectively drive up the cost of energy, robbing this wealth from the third world. Given that many third world nations are energy exporting countries, the losses from marginally higher energy prices resulting from hot showers would be offset by the gains in welfare from the poor, energy exporting nations. But this is all stupid because hot showers in the first world don't dramatically affect energy prices.

But let's return back to my central point. From a simple marketing prospective (fuck you world for making me think like this), imagine the two ideologies approach a middle class man or woman in India. Capitalism says I can offer you running water, a better diet, heat, and maybe oh just maybe a car. Marxism/socialism/mao thirdworldism whatever the lefty fad of the day is comes to him and says, think not of hot showers comrade, we have to sacrifice. Unless the Indian is a malcontent misanthrope who hates his fellow humanity (aka the rhizzone) he's going to side with the capitalist, every single time.

Seriously, you're going to be denying material progress as the main selling point of the left (haha because it failed in achieving that goal)? Do you think the peasants of Russia rallied to the flag of the red banner because they wanted to overcome cisgendered patriarchy and create a just society and all of those other things that only someone so privileged (now i'm using your words) as a western truly cares about? No, they wanted some fucking running hot water.

Excuse me, I going to go poop in my heated toilet. I don't want the water that splashed on my fat firstworlder ass to be slightly discomforting.

i don't really get the point of a marxist trying to discuss this post-capitalist society and just what is going to have to be sacrificed by who because thats all a totally made up fantasy and very far removed from the immediate work at hand

The hot shower is a metaphor you fukkin idiot. But I'm glad my speech that talked about how you'd have to sacrifice women going to school made you write that big steaming pile about 'marketing' leftism to a middle class man or woman in "India." The peasants who raised the red banner were serednyak and kulak scum anyways so they should have been exterminated just like you.

i dunno, hot showers are still kind of a hot topic. maybe we could use a different bathroom metaphor... may I suggest one of "wiping one's own ass?" its a contentious question that I think will relate better to peoples' lives. front to back or back to front...? and are the balls (or virtual balls, in the case of those not privileged enough to be white males) at the front or.. at the back? is the fact that left to right is not even on the table teh fault of the patriarchy?

these are the questions of our day. perhaps should we cease wiping our own asses altogether? i've read, in Books, that diets high in milk-fats and caffeine can induce "diarrhea," which, while usually an unpleasant symptom of bodily unhealth, is something that I think we could harness here for greater social equity amoung the masses - as diarrhea's natural anal rinsing action could eliminate the evils of ass-wiping all together!
