Once, Sam Harris, author of The End of Faith, Letter to a Christian Nation, The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, at one of those religion versus atheism hootenannies, told the assembled crowd that he felt that the fear of death was overblown. From his perspective, i.e. the correct scientific view unencumbered by the patently absurd philistinism of his outrageous interlocutors, there wasn't anything mysterious, let alone ethically frightening, about death at all. To prove his point, he asked the crowd to simply imagine the city of Paris, France, in which they were, each of them, utterly absent. (the shindig was located in the united states.) Since they could understand the concept of their non-existence in Paris, a bustling and industrious city to be sure, is it such a further step to imagine their entire absence, from everything, ever?

What might amaze you is the fact that a large portion of the crowd found this argument not only convincing, but even some what exhilarating. They had never known that they were capable of expanding their imaginations to such lengths, as to cover up their own origin, and were very pleased.

But Sam Harris wasn't simply scoring a cheap shot by using some cheap rhetorical trick on his audience in order to dazzle and trick them into accepting his tricky point of view. To him, he really can't conceive of even the notion of a world in which he does not exist as a disembodied gaze, witnessing his own non-existence.
