details on the upcoming uber vs waymo case

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/01/before-trial-judge-wont-let-waymo-include-its-own-financial-projections/

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/30/technology/waymo-uber-lawsuit.html

both articles approach the story at different angles so both are worth a read

lol at the last two lines of the NYT article about fired uber and waymo engineer levandowski:

After he was fired, Mr. Levandowski announced that he would start a religion worshiping a Godhead based on artificial intelligence.

“Let’s stop pretending we can hold back the development of intelligence when there are clear massive short term economic benefits to those who develop it and instead understand the future and have it treat us like a beloved elder who created it,” reads the passage on the website for “Way of the Future,” the religion founded by Mr. Levandowski.

trial begins feb 5 i think

i have no idea about corporate law or anything like that, so unless there's some crazy bombshell or whatever i wont have much to say about this until there's a final verdict i guess.

This year, however, circumstances forced Uber’s hand. Improving driver relations became more crucial than ever as competition grew and the supply of new drivers Uber could recruit or poach dwindled. Uber could no longer simply replace with new ones the sometimes dissatisfied drivers who left the platform. Maintaining its supply of existing drivers was an even more important factor in hitting profitability for a company that still loses $1.46 billion a quarter.

you'll notice in this older piece by horan the % of the fare kept by drivers in 2014 to 2016 was getting lower, lower, lower. then in 2017 they had to abruptly raise it back up to 80%.

tesla lost 670 million Q3 2017. q4 results are released tomorrow and are expected to be worse - possibly as much as a billion dollars according to Business Insider's guess:

we'll find out in about 11 hours! sweet dreams for me

tesla losses of 770 million in q4 2017, 3.4 billion remaining which is about the same as at the end of q3. seems like they're treading water but revenue is up so i guess that's all they care about? tesla shares are up 3% today based on the good news, hmmmm.

eric newcomer and others liveblogging the 2nd day of uber vs waymo. honestly i don't really care to keep up with every little detail, as funny as i'm sure some of it would be. i find the format basically unreadable.

its wild man. snapchat shares were up like 30% two days ago because they lost less money than expected. i shouldn't pay attention to the daily fluctuations of the stockmarket because itll break my brain

#345
The only thing I can think is it involves a lot of magical thinking, like, snapchat's going to be so technologically relevant once it survives into neo-feudalism that it will be a protected telecom. But just in case that actually happens, when I said "magical" I meant like stage magic.

Elon Musk decries UAW union, promises employees frozen yogurt and rollercoaster machine
https://m.sfgate.com/business/article/Elon-Musk-promises-frozen-yogurt-roller-coaster-10966087.php

Day 578 on Mars: Things are looking bleak. Macy is dead, walked out the airlock this morning without protective gear and let the dust storm scour her down to the bone. The SpaceX Marsuit™ wouldn't have helped much anyways, we found out a few weeks in that they shipped with faulty air filters and Paul had been using the backups in the coffee machine because the box with coffee filters never got shipped. I missed Paul at first, back when I thought he could fly us back home someday. When Macy explained the engineering challenges of SpaceX sending us a rocket capable of a return mission, let alone the astronomical cost for no profit, I understood why she caved his skull in with that pipe wrench. Macy was always so practical. Shame about the wrench, damn thing's crooked now and we don't have a spare. Paul was a real affable guy, did a great job navigating the rocket here but sat on his laurels since landing and kept sneaking extra rations. I'm getting sidetracked, sentimental. Anyways.

84 days since our last text communication with earth: the disjointed screed about "foolish unbelievers who wish to crush our dreams and have forced me to file for bankruptcy." The audio/video relays never worked, I told them we should have shipped an old audio only NASA transmitter but room was limited and Elon insisted on "only the best." A shame that, he should have been made to see our faces as he gave up on us. I suspect the second rocket with promised relief supplies is not coming. I wonder if they even started building it. Supplies are dangerously low, as is oxygen. The atmospheric processor is breaking down and that damn twisted wrench ruined the replacement parts as we tried to assemble them.

Yesterday after much debate we opened the last resort emergency supplies container, only to find that instead of backup oxygen, water and freeze dried food it contained 300 Sodastream carbonator refills, a dozen gallon barrels of "Dr Pete" syrup, 3 foosball tables, novelty party hats and a banner that read "Welcome to Mars Elon!" The blast of colorful paper confetti that shot out of the container reminded me of the decompression accident that claimed Amir and the hydroponics lab. Poor Amir.

Too late now, I realize that the childlike wonder of a billionaire manchild who promises desserts and roller coasters as compensation for working his laborers to death in unsafe conditions is not what I should have trusted to take me into space.

the uber vs waymo case is all over already, with a settlement.

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2018/02/its-all-over-why-the-waymo-v-uber-self-driving-settlement-makes-sense/

Waymo gets what it wants: Uber agreed to ensure that none of Waymo’s "confidential information" would end up in hardware or software produced by Uber’s self-driving division, known as the Advanced Technologies Group. Waymo also will receive a sizeable 0.34 percent equity share of Uber, worth over $244 million. No money has actually changed hands: it’s an all-equity arrangement, which means Waymo is financially invested to some degree in Uber's future. (The New York Times reported Friday that Uber's board had initially offered 0.68 percent, but that proposal was yanked prior to trial. After Thursday's fourth day of trial, settlement talks resumed.)

lol i would not have accepted to those terms if i was google. cash only please.

uber's overall 2017 financial results:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-13/uber-sales-reach-7-5-billion-in-2017-despite-persistent-turmoil

i think we may not get specific q4 results about uber losses, but we can put together an estimate based on previous reports

4.5 billion for the year

700 million for q1 (https://www.cnbc.com/2017/05/31/uber-posts-massive-loss-wsj.html )
1.1 billion in q2 (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-11-29/uber-s-third-quarter-loss-is-said-to-widen-to-1-46-billion )
1.46 billion in q3 (same link as above)

that means it lost roughly 1.24 billion in q4, which is coincidentally how much softbank invested in that quarter.

Edited by Chthonic_Goat_666 ()

#358
ok, nevermind that last post. it's very hard to work out an exact timeline because uber tend to release and emphasise EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) and also take out "one-time" losses, like that first 700 number is suspiciously low.

these numbers are probably correct for q4.

following this stuff is kinda stressing me out to some degree because i feel like a crazy person. so many of these companies are losing money hand over fist yet assumed to be the future. spotify, hulu, netflix, lyft, uber, tesla. all losing hundreds of millions a year and i'm sure there'd be plenty more examples. it's addictive to follow but i should probably get back to thinking bigger picture.
