That would make a lot of sense, since higher quality live comedy pretty much always comes in the form of groups, rather than a single person on a stage ranting.
It is easier for comedy to be reactionary because it's easier to get your audience to laugh at something that goes against the status quo. That isn't to say that getting your audience to laugh at the status quo itself isn't a lot better and far more engaging, because it is, and some stand up comedians (like George Carlin on occasion) even do this, it's just more difficult do, and often requires a team effort (different actors) to pull it off on a consistent basis.
A single person talking can really do only so much to frame a narrative palpable enough to an audience.
I would say that improv is a better medium for more sophisticated forms of comedy. (That is if you can find good improv that isn't snatched up by production studios)
