I fixed it. there was a mysterious post that is in the search index but not the database itself. it looks innocent enough (third from the bottom, where bhpn is yelling about NAZIs)

as a kludge you can use Search to search by author and then edit the "show_as" parameter in the URL for the results by replacing "topics" with "posts"

also the drop down for that option is still there anyway at the bottom of the Search page

to the extent that anyone here has posted about attracting new posters to post, i think they can agree that the current decision to have a big chunk of the front page announcing that the supposed "hottest threads" on the rhizzone haven't seen activity in 4-5 days is, like, Needs Improvement? what does that equation look like? hasn't the Stalin thread had like 300+ posts during that time?
