this is the best performance of the best philip glass track imo. i first heard it on the radio driving in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere many years ago. it took ages to find the recording but it was worth it because it gives me chills every time

whoa that pink vomit is straight outta madame bovary

Emma dies and vomits up a mysterious black liquid, which I always took to be Flaubert's ink, as if his animation of this character was a secretly admitted heresy. The pink vomit seems to be the expulsion of a culture imposed femininity escaping as the reality of bondage to the girating spiraling pole-horse becomes apparent. For instance the 'shadow' of the 'handsome boy,' who wears a mask but seems to have the same color hair and a special tangential relation to the singer, fires the squirt gun into the mouth of the singer raising the 'doll' object out of the already dolled-up singer's detached head as some sort of totem. Emma in Madame Bovary, to me, was always at the mercy of the author, and because of that an apparition and possesed. The doll like nature of the singer and their lack of agency in the carnival strike me the same way.
