although i shouldn't make fun of fightback too much because i consider the ndp 'my party' insofar as it's the official party of the labour movement. i've voted for it every federal or provincial election since 2006.

i have done this as well for my entire voting life, i wrestle with it every election and it always seems like the correct choice. my local NDP candidates have always been very good. I voted for Linda Duncan when I was in Edmonton-Strathcona and convinced a few other people to do it too and she won by only a few hundred & it was a pretty big deal. felt good

this is what i do instead of smash capitalism, i file into a school or church and mark an x for the mildly left of centre party. i'm pretty hardcore

linda duncan is the last person i ever voted for, she's a nice lady. i attended the pre-mulcair leadership debate at the university thinking it would be a good laugh but came away feeling dirty and hollow

so the SDS in america has decided to push for in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants in a bunch of states that dont have it. they started a campaign in florida and apparently it worked, which is sort of shocking. the next targets are utah and arizona, which are much tougher nuts. the tuscon SDS branch is brand new and doesn't know wtf they're doing, their idea was to ask SDS chapters in other states to start boycotts/protest at arizona college sports games in those other states. my frso pal here wants to do that and asked for criticism at the meeting we had and I said something like "that seems like red meat for the sort of people who go to football games, to protest tuition inequity in another state by bothering people during their game" but he said that we can craft the message so it doesnt seem like we're against the players, just applying pressure to the schools, and, that if we get like one out of every hundred people at a utah football game against arizona to think about calling the dean and saying 'threaten to boycott arizona until they reverse their discriminatory policies' that probably has a big effect.

no word on when we start collectivizing and expropriating though.

now that the platform is out a bunch of people have come out and said they won't vote NDP unless something changes, which includes Stephen Lewis' wife and such.

there was a leftist coalition party in alberta that coalesced out of actual willingness to mobilize against the rise of the koch-funded Wild Rose party, they didn't manage to get a platform together until like a week before the election, and for some reason decided to also not distribute any campaign materials (even signs which would have nothing to do with platform points) until they had a platform. it was funny.

after a lightning fast skim the ontario ndp platform seems to be a "attempt to phrase leftist policy as conservative rhetoric" snoozefest that won't excite anyone actually on the left and won't fool anyone on the right because they still know it's the ndp, confirm/deny?

there is "canadian", which is (usually) pepperoni, bacon and mushroom. also "hawaiian" (ham and pineapple) was first invented and sold in canada. i don't think canada has developed any sort of crust technology.

is that american bacon, british bacon or canadian bacon

good question. it's really just any pork product. there are 'canadian' pizzas with peameal bacon (canadian bacon), but also ham or just (american) bacon. really depends on the restaurant. i don't really like mushrooms all that much so i never really get that. if you're ever in canada though, why not do like the romans.

#134
thank you as always for your thoughtful and detailed exposition of a thorny issue

Owing to the Staples thesis, Canadian pizzas are actually wheat only. With some coal. And their official motto in Canada is, also owing to the Staples thesis, "Canada: we've got that."

Common contenders as the Canadian national food include:

Poutine

According to an informal survey by the Globe and Mail conducted through Facebook from collected comment, users considered the following to be the Canadian National dish, with maple syrup likely above all the other foods if it was considered:

Poutine (51%)
Montreal-style bagels (14%)
Salmon jerky (dried smoked salmon) (11%)
