Ontario budget 2014: Andrea Horwath says NDP voting against budget

Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said this morning she will not support the minority Liberals' budget, a move that would send the province into a provincial election in June.

"I have lost confidence in Kathleen Wynne and her ability to deliver," Horwath said Friday. "I cannot in good conscience support a government that people don’t trust anymore.

"This budget is not a solid plan for the future. It's a mad dash to escape the scandals. It's time for change. We do not support this government any longer."

not future widow

pretty brave of her. the unions basically screamed for her to support the budget to stop the conservatives from winning, but she's betting that the election will pull the province left.

the biggest rage issue is the gas plant brouhaha with the clear subtext of "lefties gonna left" so who knows
#3
if the center-left lose this election i hope they remember back to 2007. ontario had a referendum on moving to a proportional representation system. the referendum was stupid and required a large supermajority to pass. but don't worry the liberals still mostly campaigned against it and it got less than 40% of the vote.

now let's look at the most recent poll in ontario:

liberals 35%
conservatives 32%
ndp 22%
green 9%

hmm yeah wouldn't want proportional representation today would we, what with there being a real chance the conservatives could win a majority of seats if their vote climbs to 40% or so in the election.

anyway since i'm not cynical i still hope the ndp does well.
#4
in the ndp press release on this they said they want a government that "creates jobs by rewarding job creators". what they mean is they want to raise corporate taxes and then put that money into a tax credit for new hires. but they decided to say it using the most right-wing language possible lol.
#5
rewarding those guys creating all the jobs down at the job factory is definitely past due
#6
quote this if you have mad respect for job creators y'all
#7
it must be funny to live in a place where unions can say something and someone listens
#8
Good for her. People think that the one socialist in the room can't do much but here it is. Also, the idea of liberals being against proportional representation is p funny
#9
there's an organization/paper in ontario called fightback which is trots and they immediately put out an article which essentially implies they expect and hope that the ndp loses because horwath has pulled the party so far to the right. meanwhile the unions are mad at her because they would much rather have this budget than a tory one. one ndp MPP implied to a cbc reporter yesterday that if horwath doesn't become premier that she will get forced out as leader.

my district will probably go conservative again so it doesn't really matter who i vote for i guess.

oh wait i thought you meant frso, goddammit how hard is it to come up with something a little more original you already have to freaking specify whenever you mention the frso (i mean the good one)

copy this to your clipboard for future use referring to the canadian fightback: fightback ( not of frso (not of frso/oscl) )

I went to one of their meetings at a pub. Trotskyists seem like their hearts in the right place, but we had like 20 people there. Start an affinity group and some direct action already, you're not going to get more by talking

they try to steal members from other groups so they can hold more pointless pub discussions about correct line, like try talking to a dude from another tendency at a trot meeting and see how they all dog pile you

a few years ago there was an ontario new democratic youth conference in hamilton or some shite. anyway fightback stacked the meeting for the election of the new executive, so it temporarily looked like trots would be running the provincial youth association. all the little eichmann types that just want to be legislative assistants and such flipped out and wrote this long letter calling fightback insane for supporting communism like mao instead of social-democracy. so they invalidated the vote and held a new one which the bureaucratic types stacked and made sure the trots cried.

which also reminds me that in the last election an old socialist guy was nominated in niagara falls or something for the ndp. so the media was like uhh horwath you know this guy calls israel an apartheid terror-state or whatever. so the party was like oh his forms were filled out wrong, he's not a candidate anymore lol.

i'm too lazy to go hunting but these are the resolutions the social-democrats wanted passed:

1. ONDY Commitments

Whereas the doctrines of Socialism, Leninism, Trotskyism, Stalinism and Maoism run opposed to the NDP and CCF's principles of social democracy and co-operation;
...
And whereas much of the history of the party has been ordinary people fighting to define a social democracy outside of the confines of socialist rhetoric, socialist hierarchy and socialist thought control;

And whereas in many countries where the doctrine of Socialism is implemented, human rights are stomped, opposition is crushed and basic human dignity is impugned;

And whereas New Democrats support a co-operative commonwealth in Canada that cannot be accomplished through Socialist hierarchy, Socialist patronage, and Socialist idealogical orthodoxy;

And whereas New Democrats believe that a co-operative commonwealth in Canada can be built through the greater co-operation of peoples at the local level, elevating up in the form of co-operative and non-profit housing, banking institutions, farm production, stores and other units of the economy;

And whereas the doctrine of Socialism's centralization of power will ensure that a social democracy and locally built economy can never have happen;

Be it resolved that we in ONDY commit to the principles of social democracy, in solidarity with generations and generations of CCF/NDPers since the party and movement was founded;

Be it further resolved that we in ONDY condemn the doctrine of Socialism as generations of CCF/NDPers have and hopefully always will.

2. Trotskyism

Whereas it is longstanding tactic of Trotskyists ever since the 1930s to attempt to takeover and hijack social democratic organizations, a tactic called "entryism";
And whereas it is often the case that Trotskyists in ONDY vote as a block, having made their mind up on an issue before discussion occurs, to pursue their goals, where non-invading ONDYers may be more independent in their thoughts or choose to be in solidarity with the ONDY as a whole;

Whereas the tactic of "entryism" can be fatal to an organization, as was the case when the NDP of Australia was taken over and dismantled by the Trotskyists, as detailed in the article "How the Trots Destroyed the Nuclear Disarmament Party" by Peter Myers;

And whereas ONDY encourages the discussion of measures to implement social democratic principles, but does not entertain those that do not have those basic principles of social democracy and co-operation because those viewpoints are not humane and are foreign to the New Democratic Party and its predecessors;
And whereas the doctrines of Socialism, Leninism, Trotskyism, Stalinism and Maoism run opposed to the NDP and CCF's principles of social democracy and co-operation;

And whereas there are many Communist political parties in Canada where Trotskyists can find a home;

Be it resolved that the Ontario New Democratic Youth approves and applauds the decision of the ONDY Executive to de-charter the Toronto Young New Democrats.
Be it further resolved that the Ontario New Democratic Youth will de-charter and dismember all Trotskyist blocks and organizations that may linger in ONDY, and actively prevent the takeover of ONDY conventions and councils.

3. Co-operative Exercises

Whereas we in ONDY believe the social democracy of our CCF/NDP is about local control, democracy, work and human dignity led by an individual sense of responsibility, solidarity and collective love;

And whereas we in ONDY believe this vision of Canada can only happen if citizens begin practicising more collective ways of living, working and playing;
Therefore be it resolved that ONDY conventions and councils include "co-operative" exercises where ONDYites participate and work together to achieve goals.

4. Committee of Social Democrats

Whereas the removal of the doctrine of Trotskyism from ONDY and its Communist centralization of power and poor treatment of people is a great stride toward the resurgence of social democracy and co-operation in ONDY that are the principles of New Democrats of the past, those greatest Canadians;

Whereas ONDYites are eager to explore co-operation and social democracy and to learn of how we can do this in our present society, soon:

Be it resolved that the ONDY convention form a committee of social democrats that will meet to learn about, research and actively do the principles of co-operation and social democracy that were articulated by the founders of the party and adapted over the years by New Democrats.

it's probably worth noting that both the NDP and its predecessor the CCF were founded as explicitly socialist parties and the party is still an active member of the Socialist International. Both Jack Layton (who was leader at the time) and Andrea Horwath (who was provincial leader at the time) have called themselves socialists too.

the conservative leader went to a small business today and was like fuck corporate welfare we want lower taxes for business. and people were like okay but this business takes grants from the government. just like the business you visited yesterday. and he said that's the only way you can get ahead in ontario right now, by taking government grants. we're going to lower their taxes so they don't have to do that anymore. lol. i hope he doesn't win, he's such a putz.
