the royal tenenbaums explores the cavernous horrors of how bad life can be when you're totally comfortable and able to do the things you want or love every day. alas, who has the strength?! i also hold it partially responsible for twee.

i dont think we should necessarily object to anything in the artistic field (ideologically, of course, aesthetic objections are always valid)...... rather, if we are confronted by some particularly racist chauvinist or misogynist text we should prise apart its contradictions and formulate a subversive reading

you know we have to live in garbage for our future right. *puts trash in your hair*

im not saying we should tolerate bad art, just that we shouldn't discount good art based on a narrow negative view of ideology. unless youre making a dumb personal attack in which case im p clean living actually

it was a racist attack

how is that not terrifying? like we could build up an awesome communist system where everyone gets what they need and then we'll all just spend our time making films about precious americana. the horror, the horro

I think that is the task of communists today. Never to allow precious americana to dominate our humanity.

shredding van gogh isn't the end of the world, but if you head down this road you're going to wind up with more shitheads breaking ancient vases and knocking down statues. Say what you will, but ancient artifacts are worth defending at the cost of a few low class artists/entertainers

during the cultural revolution, mao was happy that youth were going around smashing stuff but he eventually realized that like some seriously cool artifacts would get smashed up too so he ordered people he trusted to like put banners on landmarks that said maoist slogans because he knew the youth wouldn't tear down the buildings then lol

the best part is there's zero seconds of film spent on fleshing out the morality play, like even bond said the following to dr. no "World domination. The same old dream. Our asylums are full of people who think they're Napoleon. Or God." in one scene they have a video of the guy making actually a pretty reasonable speech to justify his sudden resignation from a nuclear disarmament committee because he now believes nuclear war is necessary, and after he makes a few points they just start talking over him about how they're gonna stop him... i was seeing it with my mom so i couldnt impart all this to all the sheeple around me, grazing on popcorn while they wait for the slotter

villains generally want to enact some social good while recognising the fact that people will be killed in the process. the hero foils this plan with the morality of his action being determined by the fact that the villain's plan will result in people dying, ignoring the fact that the status quo results in mass death anyway..... basically the real ethical message of these films is that the (im)morality of an action is determined not by its effect on the lives of people in general but on the extent to which it seeks to transform from existing conditions. it doesnt take much critical effort to invert this though, which is why i provide a continuous commentary in a slovenian accent on every bond film i watch, whether alone or in company
