wow thanks
I feel like a lot of people who get into this mindset are wayward and only have really simple online social clubs to get involved in, or worse, cliques in their DSA chapter. The overflow of these types of people might be a sign that there's still a significant lack of leadership in socialist groups, with social media acting as an exponential factor. The reason I think social media brain poison is secondary is just my personal experience: I've witnessed a bunch of drunk boomers in leadership at a local music festival here, and it was stressful for many non-cliques dealing with their thought-terminating geriatric bureaucracy. One result of that geriatric bureaucracy is that we it didn't have great social media communication. Also two of the board members got into a fist fight during a show.

the format utterly fails as an attention-holding/dopamine IV drip but that style of social media consumption is ultimately less fulfilling. it is also far less addictive, because you aren't getting the same reward system

It’s an addiction so we gotta treat it like any other addiction. Build support networks outside of it, understand how it works, why it works, and what the withdrawal/relapse signs are, then keep trying until it sticks.
a discussion of this article included an anecdote about a webadmin adding a 5 second delay to page loads instead of outright banning problematic users (who were otherwise registering replacement accounts and such). these users found the wait unbearable and promptly moved on to get their hit elsewhere. it worked like a sort of shadowbanning
