i've been looking at stuff on youtube about shanghai and beijing just because i'm really excited and like to get a visual impression of what i'm in for. youtube being youtube though, it offers me a bunch of super obnoxious yank expats showing off their bartering 'skills' and things like that, and in particular a video featuring 2 of these chucklefucks apparently from different youtube channels meeting up to share their pros and cons about shanghai and beijing and which they like better. the very first con they give for beijing is 'Feels very communist'. they gripe about the '1984' vibe because there are hammer and sickles 'everywhere' and soldiers marching around and stuff. and that it's not just a vibe but that police control of behaviour is very tight. but then in the same breath that they're actually much more lax on the law there in terms of foreigners riding scooters around and stuff like that. all in a video they recorded while casually strolling around a public park and happily uploaded to youtube for all to see. ah, the oppression.

it's weird hearing that sort of thing because i did not get the sense of control at all. there is a lot of 'cover your ass' security stuff, like a bit of a paper trail, but it's not really that ominous. it's just a normal country. there are security hotspots but probably not all that different from like parts of india or whatever. i don't mean it's good for people who want to rock the boat or whatever just that it's the same visitor experience as anywhere else at similar levels of development. the only thing i'd say is the hyper-cliche thing which is still true: it's very easy to get sucked into the glitzy parts of urban development and just revel in the price differentials and such but the strongest memories i have are when i just wandered off into the side streets and bought street food etc.

i mean, in terms of flags and militarisation and the general vibe, i'm pretty sure i would find parts of the US far more intimidating than anything in beijing. these youtube yanks seem to just get extra freaked out by the communist aesthetic even though they're happily living and working there. anyway if i go i will be there primarily for study, won't have a lot of free time to explore but i'm really just looking forward to meeting people and learning something about the place first hand and hell yes eating food.

i barely noticed the communist aesthetic when i was in public there. the more jarring thing was like going to a city and seeing that the downtown appeared to be sponsored by pepsi, with pepsi banners hanging from every streetlight for a large area. i wrote my masters paper on chinese law by the way. it was not a good paper. but i learned a little bit about chinese law.

I imagine part of the unease US settlers have in these sorts of situation is because unlike back home these groups of uniformed men aren’t there to protect their class interests. I’m sure a lot of these tourists/ expats rarely interact with cops but now they are experiencing a very small percentage of the anxiety oppressed people here have living in Pig Nation. Or they’re just YouTube goobers idk

i did 3.5 weeks in china to visit a friend and the only time I saw a cop do anything was when they seperated a white guy who was waling on a guy for trying to pickpocket him, then gave the pickpocket a truncheon to the gut after they fished out his special pickpocket tongs

check out the military museum in beijing, it's cool as fuck, lots of captured ordinance from Korea
