A foolish man is always doing,
Yet much remains to be done

international marxist-humanist organisation? imho that's pretty dumb. how can you be marxist, with material conditions being paramount, and humanist.

if you don't have a set of moral values to judge successes and failures against, how can you advocate for any kind of change in the real world?

Panopticons posting style is cool because they never post anything of substance or value and just constantly demand people explain stuff to them. If you ever do respond with anything in depth you get inane one line responses
#1069
disagreements are a necessary element of tHE r H i z z o n E posting ecology, and "read althusser" in itself is not a particularly helpful post. 2017 is fast approaching, and if communism is to stand any chance on the message boards of the world we're going to need to learn to suck actual arguments out of the authors we namedrop

red canadian positioned the "material being paramount" of marxism as being opposed to something he never enunciated about humanism. i assumed that the something was moralism. if that assumption was wrong he will have to tell us.

or someone else could come up with an argument for why humanism is incompatible with marxism. if althusser already has, give me a synopsis of his argument.

#1072
here is something you could read:

https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/althusser/1964/marxism-humanism.htm

This is at the beginning of Part III

In 1845, Marx broke radically with every theory that based history and politics on an essence of man. This unique rupture contained three indissociable elements.

(1) The formation of a theory of history and politics based on radically new concepts: the concepts of social formation, productive forces, relations of production, superstructure, ideologies, determination in the last instance by the economy, specific determination of the other levels, etc.

(2) A radical critique of the theoretical pretensions of every philosophical humanism.

(3) The definition of humanism as an ideology.

#1073
I pretty much got the gist in five minutes of googling. It's not that difficult to approach, and it helps to spend some time becoming familiar with humanism and antihumanism anyway.

I'm glad they did, now I'm reading Althusser.

it's mostly based on the fact that Marxism is very much about human potential, but the idea that it, and morality in general, is influenced by material conditions. humanism seems more that kind of liberal bs, the rich are just misunderstood and if we all work together we can solve problems. we are the ones who plan to storm heaven, can't say i've heard of any revolutions based on humanism.
the way we think is obviously important, but how it effects the world matters more.
