After the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, the Japanese military tortured a captured American P-51 fighter pilot named Marcus McDilda in order to discover how many atomic bombs the Allies had and what the future targets were. McDilda, who knew nothing about the atomic bomb nor the Manhattan Project, "confessed" under torture that the U.S. had 100 atomic bombs and that Tokyo and Kyoto were the next targets. McDilda's false confession may have swayed the Japanese leaders' decision to surrender.

ilmdge posted:http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/philly-school-turns-troops-after-half-are-ineligible-prom-n97711The annual spring tradition is in jeopardy for hundreds of students at South Philadelphia High School. Last month, counselor Pierre LaRocco and principal Otis Hackney III informed the nearly 500 junior and senior students that half of them were not eligible for prom this year because they cut class too many times. The notification was a follow up from a September assembly which outlined the eligibility process for prom.
"They thought we weren't serious," said LaRocco. "Men and women overseas are fighting for your freedom and your using that freedom to walk around the hallways."
The administration realized they had a situation on their hands. The principal and guidance counselor brainstormed how to make attending prom possible without giving away the opportunity to those who didn't earn it. They came up with a way for students to earn back their prom night.
Students have until May 9 to create a care box for 2012 South Philadelphia High School graduate John Russino's unit serving in Afghanistan. As of Monday, the school has received 10 packages.
"These gift boxes will lift the morale of the troops. Soldiers are serving overseas and risking their lives. Free education, not taking full advantage of it," said South Philadelphia High School ROTC teacher Timothy Mack. "This is a great way to help soldiers and the students."

DENVER - Joshua Klohr felt that no one was paying attention to his claims of injustice.
So, the former Marine sergeant donned his old dress blues Sunday and hung himself on a ten-foot cross across from the state capitol, where 60,000 people were celebrating 4/20, the unofficial holiday of marijuana users.
Klohr admits that he hid information about himself in order to join the Marine Corps. He enlisted despite having been expelled from school, having physical problems — including asthma — and a criminal record. According to reports from the time, Klohr was charged by Denver police in 2005 with setting a cat on fire and throwing it off a roof. He was 18 at the time.
Klohr, who was demoted to private, sentenced to a month in the brig, and discharged from the Corps last year after being convicted at special court-martial of insubordinate conduct, disobeying a superior officer, and failure to obey an order, said he believes he was railroaded out of the Corps, and his crucifixion stunt was the only way to bring attention to his case.
hahah every single person in the military is fucking trash

yeah i'm sure it's tough which is why i'm also sure that they were pressuring him to break the quality rules and accept dregs, whether or not he actually refused is another question
