3D printing has been possible for a while but the prices are now low enough for people who really want a 3D printer to get one. The Makerbot (brand) Replicator (printer) is on the market for $1,749.00, and owners can print out a 3D model and get a real-life Thing. It can print up to two colors of plastic to form the object, but it seems like people tend to just print in white and then paint over them for a lot of things.

Makerbot has a site with a social network type of interface for people to share 3D object designs and I've been into looking around to see what uses this'll have when the price goes down even more to the point of actually being practical rather than just a neat geeky novelty. A really simple thing a lot of people are making are just Stands for stuff, like something to fit your iphone into or prop a wine bottle against, and it seems like that got to the point where people had contests to make up the most ridiculous iphone case.

There are also more interesting uses, including being able to print out shot glasses for a party, toys, tools, replacement parts, etc.

Torrent site Pirate Bay recently added a section for physical objects ("physibles"), and explained why the future is cool:

We're always trying to foresee the future a bit here at TPB. One of the things that we really know is that we as a society will always share. Digital communication has made that a lot easier and will continue to do so. And after the internets evolutionized data to go from analog to digital, it's time for the next step.

Today most data is born digitally. It's not about the transition from analog to digital anymore. We don't talk about how to rip anything without losing quality since we make perfect 1 to 1 digital copies of things. Music, movies, books, all come from the digital sphere. But we're physical people and we need objects to touch sometimes as well!

We believe that the next step in copying will be made from digital form into physical form. It will be physical objects. Or as we decided to call them: Physibles. Data objects that are able (and feasible) to become physical. We believe that things like three dimensional printers, scanners and such are just the first step. We believe that in the nearby future you will print your spare sparts for your vehicles. You will download your sneakers within 20 years.

The benefit to society is huge. No more shipping huge amount of products around the world. No more shipping the broken products back. No more child labour. We'll be able to print food for hungry people. We'll be able to share not only a recipe, but the full meal. We'll be able to actually copy that floppy, if we needed one.

We believe that the future of sharing is about physible data. We're thinking of temporarily renaming ourselves to The Product Bay - but we had no graphical artist around to make a logo. In the future, we'll download one.



The stuff on pirate bay isn't very cool yet (4chan anonymous mask was the most popular design for a while ), but there are creative ideas on the makerbot site. It's neat to look around these sites and see what we'll be printing out in the Future instead of running to the store.

It just goes to show the worthlessness of science imo. It just shits me that people sperg out about dumb shit like 3D printing ("oh wow a machine that crafts things! what's a lathe?") like it's the second coming of Christy.

stuff like this, AR glasses, smartphones with robotic operators, etc. just accomplish things that people can already do except a bit easier or more conveniently, and with thousand dollar pricetags

i think it's hard to say what the main uses of it will be at this point, which is why i like browsing that site, but i appreciate any step toward having a Star trek-style replicator, which I think starving people would really dig

like the early days of the internet there will be a bit of heady giddiness at the novelty and potential of it all, then the patent lawyers will quickly commercialize replication patterns and the end result is you still end up paying the same amount of money for stuff except the companies get to keep the difference saved from eliminating manufacturing and operations staff

similarly AR & AR glasses are going to just be another platform for advertising, not just as a space for pop-up advertisements, but advertisers are salivating at the prospect of collecting instantaneous biofeedback from the consumer group of 18-45 year olds who spend too much money on dumb toys. your every lingering gaze will be another data point to fine tune the virtual billboard campaigns

its a cool concept but historically capitalism has found a way to pervert pretty much any technological development to shift the largest portion of gains to the neo landlords who now hold titles patents and copyrights instead of deeds, a small gain going to the class of computer-savvy administrators needed to program & automate the tech and a net loss going to the people who are made obsolete
