really hand dominance doesn't matter too much with most tasks. im left handed and do most things with my right with the exception of favoring my left hand for writing and sportsball. i use a mouse right handed and have fired "right handed" guns without issue. Also learned every instrument so far in the right handed way. really though, i don't understand his issue unless he was in an indoor firing range without hearing protection, which would be understandably jarring. outside ranges tend to let the heat and smoke dissipate rather quickly. i'd argue that guns are about the same level of traumatic in a controlled environment like that as a rollercoaster is, you just have to be prepared to undergo some discomfort.

i will admit getting hit with a discharged shell is a bit shocking the first time or two. being at a gun range the last thing you want is something metal hitting your person, and most people don't know what an actual bullet to the body feels like. I get your point, if he was holding it that way that is not the smartest idea, you want to shell to go the intended direction, as they can be quite hot. when i still had the mousin-nagant, that thing would leave a welt on your chest even if you did everything right, unless you had extra padding between the buttstock and yourself. the back was designed to be lethal as a melee weapon, so it makes sense.
