Burkina Faso Independence Leader Sankara's Body to Be Exhumed

Officials in Burkina Faso are exhuming the remains of former President Thomas Sankara and 12 of his colleagues, who were assassinated during a coup d'etat in 1987 were unearthed on Monday. The exhumations began Monday morning at the Dagnoen Cemetery, which forms “First, we will find who assassinated him in October 1987, and where it occurred, how, and then somebody, or people, [will] have to respond to the justice,” the leftist’s younger brother Paul Sankara stated. “The DNA process through exhumation will help to get to the bottom. The whole point is to have truth, justice and, eventually, reconciliation. Without that, it won’t be possible.”

Tests will follow to prove the identities and causes of death.

Thomas Sankara served as President of Burkina Faso from August 4, 1983 up until his assassination on October 15, 1987. The Marxist revolutionary and feminist Pan-Africanst leader, transformed what was then the former French colony of Upper Volta into Burkina Faso, attempting radical democratic reforms that were halted with the coup that overthrew his popular government.​ Sankara who is widely viewed as an African political hero, was killed in 1987 by his second-in-command Blaise Compaore, who went on to rule the country until his ouster in 2014.
