The mayor (possibly, could be a fall guy) kidnapped 43 well known left wing students in southern Mexico with the help of narcos. round of protests. the government found a mass grave they believed to be of the students, turns out it not only wasnt, so the bodies have still yet to be found, but it was a previously unknown mass grave, one of a series that had been found searching for the students. round of protests. at these protests someone sets fire to a big door, later believed to be a police provocateur because he ran behind their shield wall (lol).
At the same time this is happening the armed militias that had been patrolling various parts of southern mexico against the narcos had largely been coopted into the mexican security apparatus, but in response to the students protest theres a bunch of arguing about how the government's tactics against the narcos are clearly failing because theyre part of the narcos. more and more local units are joining the dissidents.
neither the ezln or the left parties are involved in the militia thing because theyre unable/unwilling to do so.

i gather some legit teachers unions have been involved in the protests but it seems like things have gone a bit beyond protests now and i have no idea who is really involved at this point. i should point out i know very little about mexico.
it sounds like a legitimate left-wing uprising for now but could become co-opted at any point.
IIRC there was a thing in Brazil a couple of years that started out as a leftist thing for cheaper mass transit and devolved slowly into an outright right-wing revolt on the part of the upper classes.
