i tend to associate with people who arent rude so this kind of thing has never comes up. the one person who is on their phone more often than the rest in my social circle is often mocked ("you crushin?" he'll be asked, due to his fondness for candy crush) because its such patently unacceptable behavior that to have to enforce it at the door or something seems ludicrous

granted, most of these people are roughly 30 y/o so maybe its a microgenerational thing and i just dont understand 26 y/os

(some of) my friends are really annoying about about their phones. constantly on facebook, texting, taking pictures etc. during conversations

but most folks do realize it's rude, the silly basket thing came around when a bunch of people were jokingly calling a phone addict out after dinner and someone said "man we're gonna have to make you check that thing at the door."

Iwc, serious question, do you find as a self described 'high beta male' that you have trouble telling people to put their fucking phones away.

i mainly just associate with people who have some etiquette although i have dropped a few pointed 'sorry was I boring you?'s when talking to strangers in bars.

but no joke this story is straight truth: the pub trivia i go to takes itself pretty seriously and there's a strict no phones out rule while it's in progress. One team had this jackass who for the prior 2 weeks had been whipping it out under the table but thought no-one had noticed... if they did then nobody said anything, presumably to avoid making a scene.

Then when he did it on the 3rd week the quizmaster Jon, an engaging and quixotic old Yorkshireman, nonchalantly walked over, snatched it out of his hands and threw it on the ground where it smashed into a bunch of tiny pieces before turning back to the room and launching into the next question without missing a beat. The offender looked shocked, then shamed, then looked at his beer coaster for about 3 minutes before quietly slipping out and never returning.

holy shit your local quizmaster is marine todd? did everyone stand up and clap

iwc have you ever noticed that the implicit point of the alpha-beta-gamma-whatever masculinity scale is that women, being totally outside of it, are simultaneously its only objects and its lowest and most powerless category. it's not that you can't accurately describe a realm of masculine behavior that frequently occurs this way—it's just that you talk about it while failing to notice that it is actually wrong, and that recognizing it places upon you the resonsibility of condemning and changing it

ok, i'll do that today and will report back with results

for real, it's on again tonight and we're hoping to maintain our winning streak- there was a bit of aggro last week when the abrasive neckbeard nerd from our chief rivals complained that we didn't clap his team enough when the interim scores were read out, then my friend Nikki suggested we call our team 'cunts who don't clap' and they overheard and tried to passive aggressively belittle us but hey, winners are grinners!

it's even more serious business than the internet quite frankly

You have the absolute right to close off your funtime social circle especially at the age of 30. I mean lgp's post is really what it's all about, why we do everything we do: to come home and read more posts about his dog and wife

As getfiscal's link explains, it is a term generally used by older humans in their 70s to describe other objects that do not fall into that category.
