right, no one's gonna end up sounding good quickly like that, but it's a way to get beginning musicians thinking about what scales are for and how they can work. it's a good way to keep people practicing stuff that could otherwise seem like homework. they still have to learn their instrument, but you end up with happier and more motivated students if they have something concrete to work for
