are there literal Naxalites huddling around campfires in their Assam caves grumbling about fag hedonism while vigorously polishing each others rifles and somehow missing the irony

india is having a general election soon. i wonder what vote the naxalites will get? oh that's right - probably too cowardly to fight in an election. have fun setting land mines for trucks carrying huddled paramilitaries with sticks.

keep in mind that this isn't the statement of all naxalites, but rather one of several (three? four?) major semi-aboveground naxal parties, although it is the largest and most important- in other words, it's the one with the most international presence and relations, and thus has the most stake in international solidarity concerns. you probably knew already, but there's a plethora of both tactical and ideological differences within the movement, often along regional lines.

Uhh well it's from the CPI-Maoist and they also got a similar letter from the CPI-ML (Naxalbari), and while these groups don't literally represent all of the Naxalites they're the two largest and most active groups. The CPI-MLN might be described as "semi-aboveground" but the CPI-Maoist definitely isn't, they run the PLGA which is more or less synonymous with the current conflict and operates probably half of the active guerrilla units. The guy who signed that, Ganapathy, is the gensec and is the #1 target of Operation Green Hunt.

while the party itself is banned, certain of its affiliated groups (at least a couple of worker's organizations, several student groups, etc.) are still legal and functional political entities, which is what I meant by "semi-aboveground"- smaller militant naxal groups don't have these assets. And yes, like I said, the cpi-m are the largest and most important militant naxalite group, but it doesn't mean that other currents in the movement aren't interesting or worth paying attention to or important- for instance, some naxalites intentionally narrowed their scope in the wake of majumdar's "annihilation" line in the 70s, and i don't think that strain has left the movement- though i certainly don't want to overstate its case here

the pens are rendered commemorative by this tradition. if we're serious about reducing the deficit, we need the president churning out more memorabilia, not less.

i saw a canadian liberal guy today argue that we need to increase pension payments for seniors retiring in like 2035 or something because pensioners buying things increases demand in the economy which boosts growth. like... i guess his strategy for solving canada's economic problems was a stimulus timed to hit decades from now. never go full liberal.

i sort of can't for boring reasons. i also wanted to go to an anarchist tabling fair on sunday but it's my extended family's huge christmas party (like 50+ people go or something) and i have to stay home because i'm anxious about that. i think if i went to toronto to go to an anarchist book fair because i said i was too anxious to hang out with my family that my immediate family would not understand that. even though it's every teen's dream to be the adult that skips out on family to hang out with anarchists probably.

he means someone that lacks self-awareness and irony, that appears to others to be a zealot that is engaged in left activism for reasons of psychological mania rather than the concrete goals of the movements. he probably thinks this because of defeatism or at least pessimism but also because leftism appears preposterous in neoliberal postmodernity so people have to preface themselves with a wink in order to make clear that they aren't one of those weird people who takes socialism too seriously. this is encouraged in part because the far left attracts lots of people who sound insane and you have to establish yourself as a reasonable person to get a fair hearing. otherwise people in his social circle just assume you've stumbled upon your beliefs seemingly at random and are expressing them incoherently for reasons of severe mental illness.

i think that viewpoint is misleading because:

1. it's not as if this weird professional left subculture of journalists and activists and such is somehow less insane than the general public or random socialist zealots, it just appears that way due to their class composition. they are generally petty-bourgeois and therefore speak in ironic and educated tones but i mean they still are pretty crazy and petty and rude a lot of the time like anyone else.

2. people who think they aren't buying into ideology are usually some of the people most far gone when it comes to their assumptions about society being fixed. having a sense of irony doesn't exclude you from ideology. as zizek says, hitler was an ironist, the nazi party itself was almost a complete parody of the SPD and KPD. most populist rightists in europe today wink at the camera with their preposterous behaviour. hitchens had a developed sense of irony and he rode it into the pentagon.

As an offshoot of the Awful Kickstarter thread, there may actually be something worthwhile. Getfiscal asks Doug Henwood about narcotic earnestness project, who requires a mere six thousand dollars to become a reality, and is run by a very nice gentleman indeed.

When you donate be sure to make a comment referencing "Team Frogout," so he knows it's coming from us.

I Want To Pool Our Cash For Great Rewards: Make a comment stating that you are a part of "Team Frogout" and we could have our good buddy staring back at people from over Getfiscal's Shoulder. You should also mention in the thread to correlate numbers.

As of this writing he is at $1,833 of a modest $6,000 goal. About $1,500 of that is from us.

Over the last two days, we have been following Getfiscal asks Doug Henwood about narcotic earnesness project in the Awful Kickstarter thread. We started out mocking the campaign, which only had a few nasty photos of poorly made hotdogs. So why are we so supportive of it now? After reading into the campaign a little bit, it really seems like Getfiscal is a genuine guy with a decent business plan. He's dreamed of owning his own restaurant for years, but just does not have the money to make it happen. He has all his suppliers lined up and he already has a mildly successful business running out of his trailer. Oh, and did I mention that he's willing to paint a gigantic on the side of his building if he's successfully funded? Because he is.

He isn't asking for much, he already has the property, he just needs to set up the kitchen. For this he needs $6000 dollars. Before goons found his Kickstarter he had $80, at the time of this post he has $1,887. We've even catapulted him to the front page of Kickstarter!

With your help we can push him up to his goal of $6000 dollars. We are not doing this ironically or mockingly. We are doing this to help a person who really is passionate about his business. We want to see him succeed! He's a little overwhelmed with the support he's gotten from us in the last two days, I believe. He's also, naturally, a little confused as to where these donations are coming from.

Getfiscal will use your money for the following things:

Finish the interior: Wall board, stainless steel walls in the cooking area, lights, a vent hood with a grease trap, etc.
A deck with tables and umbrellas in front of the building for dining (approx. 20' x20' )
A larger cooling unit for perishables (aka hotdogs.)
Stainless steel tables for food prep.
A larger serving window to replace the window that came with the building.
Permits
Tile flooring.
Adding a restroom.
Purchase a set of steam pans
Install an electrical breaker box
Install a sink as required by Alabama health codes.

What if I don't care about a drat frog?
Then just donate at whatever tier you feel like and ask Getfiscal to give you free hotdogs to the homeless/hungry.

Is that ketchup on that drat hotdog?
If you want it to be, yes. Getfiscal believes that the best toppings for a dog are the ones you want, so if you choose to apply ketchup to your hotdog, that's on you.

Let's make Getfiscal's dream a reality!

p.s. i can relate to the arguments about how frustrating the exclusion of actually fucking poor people is from various conversations on/about the left, but i don't see why it's applicable only to class discussions. e.g. a good friend of mine works for ngos trying to provide advice to companies who claim to want to be more conscious of gender and sexism in their work (often other ngos or activist organizations), and sometimes she writes things and i read them and they are full of great ideas and observations but are so completely locked away in an academic linguistic framework that i often want to (and do) take more issue with the fact that she's limiting her potential audience with that sort of thing, far more than with the actual content of the writing.

like yes- of course- if we learn how to discuss these topics inside an academic framework then of course we're naturally going to continue to talk about them that way, but for fuck's sake can we stop. for example bhpn you sound like you are the guys from La Chinoise (i recently rewatched parts of it so it's in my head) who just yell out marxist quotes as though they are bible lines. they are caricatures. you are a caricature. you might even have intelligent points sometimes but it just comes out as BRRRRRRTTT like a vuvuzela (check out that timely ref) every time.

effective communication rests on understanding your audience(s) and choosing imagery, phrasing and vocabulary that conveys your ideas as crystal clear as possible. language's only purpose is to transport concepts from your brain to those of other people, so if you want to use it to its fullest power, start thinking about who you're talking to, why, and how, if you want them to actually engage with what you're saying. the entire idea of communism or anything derived from it is humans actually being human to each other, why is this not also consistently applied to the practice of talking about the idea itself?

why is this hard?
