Healthcare law/consulting is apparently booming, though. I even got offered a job in that field and I have zero experience. Maybe you could do that with your t1 skills
all true

i got what i needed out of them which was courtroom experience. i could go plaintiff side but i'm not down with faked injuries which i saw a good deal of at pastjob.
new job is with college friends... have been doing side legal work for them for past couple of years for free and now they'll hook up the insurance and minimal salary as I'll have more time to spend on them.
may hang my own shingle in brooklyn.
theres a lot more to plaintiff side law than just personal injury. i guess the main problem is that you mostly have health experience, but your litigation experience might qualify you for some cool job doing class actions or something. securities litigation? maybe you could sue banks and live the dream. lots of plaintiff-side firms are always looking for experienced, polished litigators and you really would fit in better in plaintiff-side culture assuming youre not a complete asswipe
you shouldnt do the solo thing unless youve already got clients lined up beforehand, generally, but thats your personal ~business judgment~ i suppose

so youve got ~3 years of experience, yeah? i would seriously think twice before going solo at this point. can you secure at least an objective/neutral letter of rec from your previous supervising partner?

I think they would write me an objective letter of recommendation; they offered to at least.
I'd consider suing banks but my last 2 firm positions put such a bad taste in my mouth that I'm not sure the subject matter can overcome the structure (micromanagement, politics, little interest in creative thinking from subordinates). I'm also not confident the best way to fuck with banks is to sue them (seems like that's already happening and they have figured out how to neutralize the threat), but I don't know enough about it to make a fair judgment.
As far as going out on my own, I have some financial backing and very low overhead right now (peak bourgeoisie). I can get by on the other gig I was talking about while I set things up and network/market. My thought about going solo was that I could directly help some people who need it. Maybe that's incredibly naive.

rofl that sounds pretty far-fetched and unlikely. i'd think a more realistic scenario would be one involving a hot air balloon.
