Having a last name “Shumway” seemed to make that clear. Alf was seen as “the Other,” in contrast to the Tanners, who represented the Anglo-Saxon family, and who—despite their presumed liberalness living in California, their mild Socialism—were to sustain, over the years, a complicated resentment for Gordon Shumway, of Biblical origins, more troublesome than network television could bear to go.
