i lived with a guy who had like dozens of books and technical manuals for the next generation and then i made a throwaway joke to him about wesley and the traveler or whatever and he was like i beg your pardon and i was like you know from TNG and he was like i don't remember any of that
#242
haha that was a great story
#243
Star Trek fandom is largely an extended, self-manifesting child pornography exchange network

my housemate told me that at every superbowl they have to fly in a large number of child sex crimes cops because apparently its like mega popular for men to be like hey bros while we're we might as well rape some kids *fist bumps*

Actually I think it's because every time there's a major sports event, rumors circulate about white slavers shipping in thousands of Moldovan girls to entertain the athletes.

Do you have any evidence for this claim? Is it true that, in addition to Riker hooking up with an androgynous person, he was originally to discover his love for homosexuality as well? I think that would have made the episode a bit confused.

Rick Berman tried not to let perceptions of what the public would find acceptable "influence us too much" in the choice of Riker's opposite, adding "but having Riker engaged in passionate kisses with a male actor might have been a little unpalatable to viewers." (San Jose Mercury News, Grapevine, March 14, 1992) Nevertheless, Jonathan Frakes felt otherwise and would later criticize the decision to cast women in the roles of the J'naii, as a love affair apparently shared between two men would have made the statement of the episode stronger .

yeah but everytime they expose an automated probe to weird radiation it ends up gaining sentience or trying to communicate with whales or becoming captain of Voyager

i read one of those once, i was on night shift and there was one in the lost and found box and it had picard in a leather jacket on the cover and man alive it was awful. it was all in the ds9 mirror universe and about mirror picard leading a rebellion against the klingon / cardassian alliance and its like come on man, if you want to write star wars fan fiction then go ahead and write star wars fan faction

#263
ahahaha yeah for real
#264
the hermaphrodite episode is just some 90s right-on silliness, the better example is the one where crusher falls in love with this guy who is the perfect lover, who turns out to be a symbiote attached to a host body, and the new host arrives and its a woman, and crushers like, im not into this anymore, even though, as established, she would be the perfect lover. ass piss balls

femen tried to draw attention to this coming up to euro 2012, im pretty sure a lot of that happened during the olympics but for whatever reason there wasnt any negative press for the duration

Not that I would doubt your reputable honor, but please provide the title of this book for verification. Picard was generally not involved in DS9. If you admit this was a falsehood you are forgiven if you say four Hail Rikers.

its ronald reagan's America + world order except everything works really great forever

that's TOS era. TNG era and beyond is pretty clearly socialist.

well ds9 was certainly socialist but yes anything rodenberry had his hands on was real pax-America type stuff

tng is communist. picard doesn't know what an investment portfolio is. dwi.

#271
ds9 is explicit about the federation existing in a post-capitalist utopia but any evidence for tng being similar is based off of circumstantial stuff which was part of rodenberry's explicitly American-model oriented utopia anyway. if youre going to say that tng is communist because picard hates greed or what have you then every movie or tv series that has ever featured a greedy villain is communist as well.
#272
you shouldnt tangle with me about star trek btw. consider this your warning shot, you wont get another *signals for the arming of the tricobalt torpedoes*
#273
wow this is some deep analysis.
#274
if star track is socialist then explain gold-pressed latinum
#275
most fascism is pretty clearly anti-capitalist as well so a post-scarcity society condemning greed in favor for the greater community ain't inherently socialist
#276
All of Star Trek has clearly presented a very moderate American approach to every social issue. The very purpose of the show was to establish a rational dialogue by presenting hypothetical situations, and how all of the various characters (which represent fundamental human archetypes) respond to different moral problems.
#277

getfiscal posted:

communist countries lack hard currencies and have to engage in direct trade of goods. much like how the soviet union had to trade gold to the West to get shit that it wanted, rather than rubles, the Federation must trade latinum, rather than simply use its baseless, valueless currency.

Picard, the captain of a starship, a high-ranking member of Federation society, has no idea what an investment portfolio. He does not live in a capitalist society.

thank you. rodenberry was a socialist but he was like a mainstream type 60s socialist, he was for utopia and against cruelty and obviously the steadily expanding net of American industrial democracy was going to get there eventually
