There are warning labels, just not the huge ones that take up half the pack like in other countries. I think America finds the idea of such excessive regulation of a consumer product unfair to the business, not to mention simply vulgar (in the case of the photos of diseased lungs), but we do think the people have the right to regulate smoking activities in bars and restaurants, and to discourage smoking generally through taxes and other mechanisms.

once i went to france with some friends from college and one of the chicks tried to buy cigarettes and asked for a pack of 'fumer tue.' i bust out laughing in the middle of the store and she hated me for the rest of the time i knew her.
