alright so ive finished the british industrial revolution in global perspective by robert c. allen and it was excellent, check it out (for your health), and heres a brief run-down to whet your 18th century economics whistle

the first industrial revolution (that is the one from the early 18th to early 19th century, as opposed to the second which occurred in the late 19th) is unique because

1. it took place almost entirely in britain

2. as opposed to previous spurts of technological and economic growth, the first industrial revolution did not quickly and organically fade but instead lead into centuries of broad based global economic growth

as such allen argues that the reasons for its occurence lie in an entire constellation of uniquely english material circumstances, circumstances which were not replicated in either other parts of the globe (such as france, holland, or china) or in england at an earlier period (such as right after the black death when wages were highest). those circumstances are, which are obviously not exclusive to the english individually but were exclusively english collectively in the sense that they *all* came together there and no where else, were

1. an economy of high wages

2. a highly literate and skilled population with one of the highest ratios of non-agricultural to agricultural labor in the world

3. a shortage of wood and an abundance of coal

4. well developed mining, shipping, and machine industries

as such in pre-industrial england labor and energy (in the form of wood) were dear and coal (absolutely) and credit (relatively) were cheap, creating great demand for labor-saving machinery which simply did not exist elsewhere. this is why many english inventions either were not adopted or failed to take in other countries (until the second industrial revolution anyway), as in places like france labor was cheap and coal was expensive, meaning that inventions such as the early newcomen engines made no economic sense.

further, the field on which those english inventions occurred were unique in that they provided for widely-adaptable machinery. in 18th century france there was a similar burst of inventiveness, but the inventions (in the fields of ceramics, lacemaking, etc.) could not be adopted for other fields. in england the inventions in the fields of mining and spinning led directly to such inventions as railroads, steamships and cotton mills, which enabled the spectacular english economic growth which characterized the period.

finally, the high level of general economic development in england meant that there was a large pool of skilled labor to draw from for both invention and fabrication of inventions. allen put together a database of 18th century inventors and found that nearly all of them came from either artisan or bourgeois background, meaning that in more feudal societies (such as britain 1400) a similar thing could not have happened.

also he throws in that the whole thing was not at all a product of property law reform or what have you because if you look at english rates of investment before and after the glorious revolution theres nearly no change, and that places like france had much more secure property laws than england but showed no similar activity.

i wrote a big ole essay on the english-ness of the industrial revolution a while back and im p sure i came to the konclusion that it was all just coal, the english happened to be sitting on a shitload of coal and then millions of indians died

its about the scientific revolution rather than the industrial revolution but it just smacks of those arguments that work backwards from the assumption that Something New This Way Has Come, and how Europe is Special and all of that

obviously the industrial revolution is a little different but is there anything really innovative about that book u read?

Edited by babyfinland ()

well im pretty sure that books makes global comparisons for things like labour costs and so on, so its not just "why england v france" but "why england v india"

he specifically says that the scientific revolution broadly enabled the industrial revolution but that there was no really direct link, like he asks how much galileo helped the italian economy

and yes china and india both figure into the book, although not as much as france or holland for comparison purposes. he calculates that early english cotton mechanization would have operated at a loss at the average rate of weaving wages in bengal, for instance

WHO RULES THE WORLD ?

"Not all conspiracies are theories."

"We are ruled, though it may be difficult to imagine, by a small dynastic power structure, largely consisting of powerful banking families, such as the Rothschilds, Rockefellers, and others. They emerged in controlling the financial system, extended their influence over the political system, the educational system, and, through the major foundations, have become the dominant social powers of our world, creating think tanks and other institutions which shape and change the course of society and modern human history."

"The powers of financial capitalism had a far-reaching aim - nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent private meetings and conferences. The apex of the system was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations ... Each central bank sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

"More than fifty years ago the Morgan firm decided to infiltrate the Left-wing political movements in the United States. This was relatively easy to do, since these groups were starved for funds and eager for a voice to reach the people. Wall Street supplied both. The purpose was not to destroy ... or take over but was really threefold: (1) to keep informed about the thinking of Left-wing or liberal groups; (2) to provide them with a mouthpiece so that they could "blow off steam," and (3) to have a final veto on their publicity and possibly on their actions, if they ever went "radical".

"There is a transnational ruling class, a "Superclass", that agrees on establishing a world government. The middle class is targeted for elimination, because most of the world has no middle class, and to fully integrate and internationalize a middle class, would require industrialization and development in Africa, and certain places in Asia and Latin America. The goal of the Superclass is not to lose their wealth and power to a transnational middle class, but rather to extinguish the notion of a middle class, and transnationalize a lower, uneducated, labor oriented class, through which they will secure ultimate wealth and power.
The global economic crisis serves these ends, as whatever remaining wealth the middle class holds is in the process of being eliminated, and as the crisis progresses, the middle classes of the world will suffer, while a great percentage of lower classes of the world, poverty-stricken even prior to the crisis, will suffer the greatest, most probably leading to a massive reduction in population levels, particularly in the "underdeveloped" or "Third World" states."

"There is nothing puzzling ... about America's gratuitously aggressive foreign policy... What an aggressive foreign policy accomplishes by slow degrees, a state of war accomplishes in a trice. Overnight kills reform, overnight it transforms insurgents into traitors and the Republic into an imperiled realm. Overnight it strangles free politics, distracts and overawes the citizenry. Overnight it blasts public hope."

"Americans are too broadly underinformed to digest nuggets of information that seem to contradict what they know of the world... Instead, news channels prefer to feed Americans a constant stream of simplified information, all of which fits what they already know. That way they don't have to devote more air time or newsprint space to explanations or further investigations."

"We have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population.... Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and daydreaming, and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world benefaction.... We should cease to talk about vague and unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of the living standards, and democratization. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts. The less we are then hampered by idealistic slogans, the better."

"To oppose the policies of a government does not mean you are against the country or the people that the government supposedly represents. Such opposition should be called what it really is: democracy, or democratic dissent, or having a critical perspective about what your leaders are doing. Either we have the right to democratic dissent and criticism of these policies or we all lie down and let the leader, the Fuhrer, do what is best, while we follow uncritically, and obey whatever he commands. That's just what the Germans did with Hitler, and look where it got them."

Carroll Quigley in his book "Tragedy and Hope"
