re: religion, i try not to talk about actual things here anymore but here goes.

years ago i was really concerned by finding the basic truth of the universe. i thought that either the world had a logical core and made sense and was therefore life had meaning, or the world was basically insane and that we would have to despair in absurdity. basic existential crisis.

anyway eventually i realized that the terms of this question were confused. first, the world does make complete logical sense, everything connects together in a rational way, and even to the point where most things people do make sense to me within the structural framework of their lives. but this extends so deeply that even ourselves are pretty much a flow of errors and deferrals. like we are basically just material flows that have continuous flashes of desires that we imagine chain together and form interesting things that are worth preserving.

but like the trite buddhist claim that this is somehow harmful is nonsense, it just is the state of ourselves, there's absolutely nothing constructive to be done about it. we're just a perceived pattern of misrecognitions. of course, in a cartesian sense we exist because there is something perceiving something, and we can pretend in a fairly functional way that our lives have arcs and plans. but at a certain point we just have to dive in and run with our desires, or our favourite logical thread of our desires, because if you spend your whole life trying to untangle all the misrecognitions then there is nothing left.

so in terms of religion, i feel i have no reason to be religious, so i'm not. but if you realize that our entire experience is basically a web of exclusions, deferrals and errors, that any fullness or transparency is impossible, then spending any time fighting against one type of possible mistake seems pretty hollow - especially when the structure of religious arguments can sometimes tell you interesting things despite being probably false.

can you elaborate?
like if i was to say, the us's taiwan policy is like in matrix 3 where the human enclave has man operated robot gun machines to fight the robots, but it doesn't matter cause the robots win and have won for the last 1000 times. what would that say about me

one of my favorite stories from carl sagan was how in the early 90s he'd get a lot of letters from people who claimed to be in contact with aliens. he found that the aliens were very talkative when asked things like "should we be good to each other" "are nuclear weapons bad" and "how should we treat the environment" but the aliens were silent when asked questions about unsolved questions in math and physics that an intergalactic civilization would have likely resolved. also the aliens had a very poor grasp of astronomy. i always think back to that when i read about god giving mohammed instructions on social behavior and animal husbandry but nothing about, say, immunology, the airfoil, the existence of the western hemisphere, and so on
