Churchill was wrong about Prussian militarism, it was and is absolutely an Alpian/Bavarian provincialism. From my limited but eye opening experience when I was in Austria, this is true, the most anal retentive individuals I have ever dealt with in my life. luckily/interestingly, the majority of the people we interacted with were Hungarians who are very nice and like to drink. I’ve been meaning to read Bernhard.

it's the eco- that perplexes me, or more accurately vexes
"keep immigrants out" + "fix the planet" = "brown people are ruining the planet"

bernhard is incredible, and a lot of his work is about how contemporary austria is the same as nazi austria but with the nazism papered over by a thin layer of catholicism. also he's really funny, there's a bit in one of his books where he rants about the toilets in vienna for like 5 pages.

I read some passages of his when I took German in college and he peaked my interest. He’s been on my to-do for awhile, thanks for reminding me. Cheers,
