that doesn't seem too crazy, if thomas bernhard(pbuh) has taught me anything it's that the austrian mind is absolutely riddled with fascism

Churchill was wrong about Prussian militarism, it was and is absolutely an Alpian/Bavarian provincialism. From my limited but eye opening experience when I was in Austria, this is true, the most anal retentive individuals I have ever dealt with in my life. luckily/interestingly, the majority of the people we interacted with were Hungarians who are very nice and like to drink. I’ve been meaning to read Bernhard.

I read some passages of his when I took German in college and he peaked my interest. He’s been on my to-do for awhile, thanks for reminding me. Cheers,

i bet he's sick to read in german, i've only read the english translations since i'm a puny monoglot, they're good though. if you are interested in more fiction about how austria is a horrible provincial society then elfriede jelinek is also good, although she's pretty stylistically different from bernhard and is coming from a more marxist/feminist angle. they both really hate austria though which is cool.
