king highlights in detail the qualitative differences between core and peripheral labor and their reproductions. he basically proceeds from mandel: "The idea that national labour can be developed to a qualitatively higher sphere when the actual daily experience of workers is the most mindnumbing, back-breaking and life-shortening work is a fundamentally un-materialist argument" (p218). so, unlike for smith, for king it is the nationally lower level of labor itself (and this is obviously originates in colonial subjugation) that serves as the fundamental barrier. technical education in the third world (primarily india, china) is either simply not competitive, or top-level graduates are funneled into research centers directly owned by the first world and the remaining graduates are subjected to low-end development work (e.g. reverse engineering).
king leaves room for your comments on china: "..., the outcome of such attempts [by China to conduct R&D/production that would rival that of monopoly], and more broadly the outcome of the coming period, not the neoliberal expansion, will give a more credible evidence regarding China's ability, or otherwise, to rise up the value chain in the way so many anticipate." the point being that there's a qualitative break between china's rise to the top of the third world and the prophesied break into the first world. he grants huawei an exceptional position throughout the analysis but on the other hand he references china's grand failures in this regard (COMAC, etc).
what do you mean when you say this work aims to threaten the labor aristocracy thesis? i didn't get that at all. not sure about amin... man i have a lot to read. like i said reading this thesis was inspirational for me for whatever reason but i don't mean to defend this dude to the grave or something.. just trying to work things through

They both argue that there are two rates of profit because monopoly prevents their equalization. Shaikh seemingly demonstrates otherwise empirically, and to argue instead that what holds in a nation does not hold globally makes less sense today than it would have historically

I get this and I also want to say upon having finishing reading it that i respect Jackson and his contribution towards retheorizing monopoly and competition along orthodox Marxist lines. I'm glad we're starting to get some serious works of global political economy, it's exciting.

elemennop posted:that article was horrifying. it sounds like it was a space for queer and trans people to have sex and do drugs. sounds cool, have fun. however, the nonchalance of doing so many drugs in public, being photographed, with no fear of the police, or being fired from your job is beyond anything i've had experience with (my cousin back in belgrade just got busted for selling weed to his friends, and is probably going to serve a multiple year stint). also, the replication of pornified misogyny as reclamation seems a little bit suspect if you're literally going to be throwing money at a woman twerking.
yeah there are gay bars like that but they keep a low profile and definitely wouldn't want their damn pictures in a magazine. there usually isn't enough light inside for photographs anyways.
re: new york hipsters, i think the problem all began with lou reed taking a dump on somebody during an orgy while high on a mix of crack cocaine and heroin. somehow for the music press at the time this was considered liberating, like doing all the drugs and having all the sex would redeem the world, but the philosophical tradition that led to that particular eightball dump was probably not the most compelling in the history of the western canon. reed was also a violent misogynist who hated his own audience. the hatred for his fans was probably the only sensible thing about reed though, because he really sucked and couldn't carry a tune to save his life. complete bilge and just sonically dreadful in every possible way. yet brooklyn audiences would still show up to listen to him suck, inspiring whole legions of extremely uninteresting hipsters to keep consuming all the drugs as if that was a profound or interesting thing. but if you ask me, they just do the drugs because they want to.

yeah i'm just beating the same drum as everyone else at this point but i think seeing how false this shit rings now is a good way to reality check the journalism of the past: articles like these aren't meaningful samples of contemporary queer culture, they're the floater pond scum of "the kinds of people who would want to be in these kinds of articles," same as in any other scene in the midst of being brutally devoured by the hegemon. you don't hook in to actual marginalized peoples for your media blitz, you skim off the top of photogenic trust fund imposters with a budget line item dedicated to cultivating their Personal Brands.
it can still be seriously dangerous to be out and photographed for queer people and sex workers who have to live actual real lives without the fallback of Grandpapa Demi-Hitler's infinite money cheat code. maybe i'm getting old and out of touch about the rest of this accursed continent but in my city if someone brought media photographers in to the kind of party this is supposed to have been they would have their fucking snitch head mounted on a pike the next morning, and everyone would know it was well deserved
also cale & nico were the real talents obviously but i'd still rather listen to the third vu album than almost anything else in the dad rock canon.
just finished 'the ways that never parted' also.
