Doesn’t the host of that podcast work with bellingcat
i didn't know that. there is a ten minute bit in episode 2 where he says that to confirm the regime did all the chemical weapons attacks all you need to do is go to bellingcat and "look at the pictures and calculations" lmao
to give him some credit he clearly feels for civilians caught in the conflict but this is somewhat overshadowed by his whole position only making sense when you realise he views the civilians and the "rebels" as entirely interchangeable. and they also run through that especially weird argument from 2015 that being against both the iraq and syria interventions makes you racist because "they're completely different countries" so somehow you are "denying syrian agency", or something. i was getting a migraine by that point.

they introduce themselves by running through whatever twitter drama they've been involved in this week, because that's politics in the UK now. discussion has to break down every 5 minutes or so for the hosts to recite whatever memes and in-jokes are floating through the ether that second, in about the most joyless and mechanical way possible. maybe i'm just getting too old for this, i don't know. i'm also aware of the irony of posting this on a forum that is (however unfairly) partly credited with starting this whole embarrassing "dirtbag left" phenomenon to begin with. whatever, it's shit.
listening to "trashfuture", i suddenly understood how one of you guys might feel at a DSA meeting in brooklyn, just surrounded by terminally online goofs and trots. read that "trashfuture" are booked to appear at the edinburgh fringe, which seems about right really.

it’s easy to clown on the FALC book, but as well as the silly stuff, the author has a profound commitment to eulogising V2 rockets—built using forced labour & stolen wealth—as “publicly funded” examples of a future-orientated social(ist?) good. this is... concerning. pic.twitter.com/aiuvV5MwEz

that phenomenon is really the metastasisation of the political element of "weird twitter" around the start of the decade, which is really its own fyad-lite quite seperate from lf (despite some natural crossover membership). i guess what im trying to say is please dont ever blame the existence of chapo on this place ever again

yeah sorry, it's just you guys get the blame when they write the bi annual "history of the dirtbag left" articles. altho you guys are much cooler than my other communist internet friends.

I posted earlier how I've only listened to one Chapo episode and I thought it was funny but I can't really keep track of most of these people, or who's beefing with who or whatever.
This post will be kind of rambly but I saw something pop up on my Twitter feed the other day about this podcast called "What's Left?" where one of the former hosts was beefing with another host about how she's just a hack who allegedly writes book reviews without reading the books (I think the luxury space communism book was involved here somehow). And I thought that was funny that he seemed shocked or surprised by that. I dunno, they all seem like hacks to me. George Orwell, whatever you think of him, wrote a funny article called "Confessions of a Book Reviewer" which is about how the job involves your editor sending a bundle of books "that go well together" like: a giant tome about medieval European history, "Flower Gardening for Beginners," some novel that was probably included in the bundle by mistake, and something called "Palestine at the Crossroads." And he just sits there for two days in his apartment smoking cigarettes and having an existential breakdown as these trash books stare at him from 10 feet away, and as the deadline approaches he finally summons the energy to feverishly scan through them enough to write about how there's "something memorable on every page!" Finally, at the last minute he files the reviews to his editor, who replies "great job!" and then sends another bundle. He started the job three years ago.
(1) The SEP trying to recruit people. To do what, I do not know. Write articles for the Web Site, possibly.
(2) Trotskyist articles about why socialists should support Hong Kong and Taiwan as bases for dissident Maoists. (May involve additional U.S. aircraft carriers.)
(3) Vile, aggressive moral panic about adolescent drag queens, indistinguishable from Alex Jones' views who has been lately trying to whip up violence and hate at drag queens and trans people. This panic started on the extreme right and seems to be spreading / infecting others. Posts were upvoted alleging a boy doing this is being abused and sexualized by gay men. I think this plays into a lot of ugly stereotypes and misrecognizes the gender roles that drag queens perform (Dolly Parton, et al.) as sex objects and not as empowerment role models, which they are.
My impresson is that straight society has long stereotyped gay men as pervs towards other men (and boys), so nearly everything gay men do is perceived as having a sexual element; while lesbians get different although no less dehumanizing treatment -- lesbians are either sexualized for the pleasure of the straight male gaze or treated as asexual frumps. I need to think about this more, but it's my feeling that a tomboy dressing up as John Travolta and lip syncing to "Greased Lightnin'" for a crowd of adult lesbians wouldn't trigger this reaction, at least in the same way, because it wouldn't serve a function for heteronormative ideology. The reaction would be "oh that's cute" or whatever, or straights would just ignore it.
Petrol posted:Drag queens are perceived by the masculine lizard brain as a trap, an attempt to seduce the good straight into desiring the penis-haver (thus the use of 'trap' as a pejorative term for trans girls). The boy drag queen is a double threat, both to the masculine herd (they're picking off our young!) and to the individual straight (who fears being seduced by the underage faux-girl). Drag kings pose neither threat at either age, although it's a different matter altogether with trans men (a threat because they are trying to steal our women etc)
oh god, totally know that feel. turns out all my critics and enemies are also suffering from a defective psychology that makes them not realize im awesome

Yeah I think at most, and even this is questionable, it's that when those FYAD imitators and refugees became Bernard Sanders boosters, some of them had vague memories of looking at old non-tHE r H i z z o n E Laissez's Faire subforum years ago back when all of those now-DSA types were right-wing libertarians, and they did a sort of clumsy dance online in imitation of some of the posters back then to try and recapture some of that feeling, because they remembered how mad it made them back then and how dark and forbidden Laissez's Faire became as elder Online memory when its original site banned it and started banning people for even bringing it up.
Which is funny, to me, because the last thing I remember doing in old LF was helping poster Wesley Button troll everyone.
