So brave of liberal amerika funnyman commentators to take the nuanced line that Maduro is an awful Stalinesque monster but that maybe military intervention is not a great idea. I miss Chinese news

I should add that over the past decade or so the profile of Canada in mining projects in Latin America has grown a lot. I think it is second only to the US in terms of capital invested in the region and a massive amount overall. We also have an oil industry that's in a lot of pain because of low prices and a bunch of domestic inefficiencies and poor planning. I think those are the obvious reasons why Canada is pushing so hard for this, in addition to the liberal jihad against Russia here and the attempt by the Liberals to position themselves as being able to out-adult Trump on foreign policy. I don't know if they actually care about "regime change" in the sense of actually changing the leadership of Venezuela as much as the right-wingers involved, I think it is more oriented against any nationalist economic policy in the Americas. As I said, it will be interesting to see the flow of experts into Bolivia to try to unseat Evo.

Canada's reformist party put out statements that were basically like "we are concerned about the concerns" but a few NDP MPs actually came out and denounced Canada's position in strong language. The government then focused on them as nutbars. Also notable was the Green Party dedicating about half of their statement to hoping the Pope would solve things.

this has absolutely wrecked me for some reason:

Addressing security forces directly, he said: "I will hold you responsible for any intimidation of my baby, who is just 20 months old."

the UN do not seem up for this at the moment:

The United Nations has told Mr Guaidó that it is willing to increase humanitarian aid to the country but required the consent of Mr Maduro's government, a spokesman said.

Well I think the liberal types want capitulation on policy objectives and the more right-wingers are more committed to having someone in power who openly promotes far-right politics with all its cultural markers. The important difference being that liberal hawks are fine with just keeping the chaos rolling forward as they extract concessions and see what happens, while preferring the opposition cloak itself in social-democratic language, while the far-right sees this as an opportunity to go full Nazi. I guess you're right that like in Ukraine this distinction wouldn't matter much if they actually took power because the liberals and far-right would work closely together, but it's important insofar as there are contradictions in the position.

On Wednesday night, the force roared into the Jose Felix Ribas neighborhood, part of Petare, to hunt for Guaido’s supporters. Shooting soon began, said a woman named Leida, who asked that her last name not be used to protect her family’s safety. Her children, aged 5 and 11, lay on the floor for cover and, at the sound of an explosion, the little boy asked her: “Is Maduro dead?"

reading a bbc article today about the maduro government blocking routes into the country for humanitarian aid requested by guaido. guaido offered a few soundbites, and there wasn't much effort to explain how, even if this food and medicine makes it through the blockades, he intends to distribute it, given that the only entity with the infrastructure to facilitate such a large operation is presumably the venezuelan government.

it wasn't until the final few paragraphs they mentioned that, actually, guaido has established these vaguely described "aid groups" in neighbouring countries. they intend to collect - not intercept - USAID's delivery and stash all the food and medicine in countries that are conspicuously not venezuela.

the people most at risk from food and medicine shortages also happen to largely, stubbornly, support the maduro government.

guaido has now said he will "authorise" a US invasion if the situation becomes dire enough. gee let's hope the impossible situation you've put the country in, where they either accept your US appointment as legit or starve to death in the streets, doesn't result in them making the wrong decision. this is so painfully stage managed and predictable, it feels like when you see an a-b-c movie written from those three act drama templates. only real people will actually die if this idiot gets his way.

i also love how the man we're told is an evil genocidal dictator, when confronted with guaido openly agitating for the overthrow of his regime, took the ruthless decision to write polite letters to the pope and the mexican government asking for mediation.

Venezuelan authorities say a U.S.-owned air freight company delivered a crate of assault weapons earlier this week to the international airport in Valencia to be used in “terrorist actions” against the embattled government of Nicolás Maduro.

An air freight company, 21 Air LLC, based in Greensboro, N.C., operates the Boeing 767 aircraft that the Venezuelans allege was used in the arms transfer. The flight originated in Miami on Feb 3.

The Boeing 767 has made dozens of flights between Miami International Airport and destinations in Colombia and Venezuela since Jan. 11, a flight tracking service shows, often returning to Miami for only a few hours before flying again to South America.

A senior Venezuelan security official, Bolivarian National Guard Gen. Endes Palencia Ortiz, who is the nation’s vice minister of citizen security, said authorities found 19 assault weapons, 118 ammunition cartridges, and 90 military-grade radio antennas, among other items.

An Ottawa-based analyst of unusual ship and plane movements, Steffan Watkins, drew attention to the frequent flights of the 21 Air cargo plane in a series of tweets Thursday.

“All year, they were flying between Philadelphia and Miami and all over the place, but all continental U.S.,” Watkins said in a telephone interview. “Then all of a sudden in January, things changed.”

That’s when the cargo plane began flying to destinations in Colombia and Venezuela on a daily basis, and sometimes multiple times a day, Watkins said. The plane has made close to 40 round-trip flights from Miami International Airport to Caracas and Valencia in Venezuela, and Bogota and Medellin in Colombia since Jan. 11.

The most recent tracking of the aircraft showed it arrived from Medellin into Miami airport after midnight Thursday.

"amnesty international would like to dust america's balls with the softest feather duster ever to remind them that maybe sanctions on government income that pays for food will starve more people"

reminder:

"If the above are accepted or cannot be successfully countered, it follows that every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba. If such a policy is adopted, it should be the result of a positive decision which would call forth a line of action which, while as adroit and inconspicuous as possible, makes the greatest inroads in denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government."

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-47211509

"Guerin

A very last question: can you tell me how much a kilo of cheese costs in Venezuela?"

Maduro eloquently and passionately calls this BBC presenter a liar and a dupe over and over and she doesnt even blink. Asks a about fucking cheese prices. Mainstream journalism is completely bankrupt and I'm amazed more people don't see it.

I'm also surprised they even published a full interview with him. I guess the BBC still thinks this interview makes Maduro look like a maniacal dictator, which was their goal, and makes the BBC look 'fair' for giving him 20 minutes.
#152
"what kind of cheese and where are you buying it" is the only way a reasonable person could respond to that question, and that's more or less what he said. no follow-up specifics were posed because she doesn't actually know/care about it, and no gestures toward survey averages because that's probably too academic an angle to use when the goal is to portray him as an elite tyrant disconnected from the people, rather than a bumbling oaf who doesn't know a statistic

sorta poetic that the BBC comes out of this looking like it doesn't know the first thing about this country it wants to see destroyed

but then ideologically motivated people will get out of this whatever they want to. there's probably also shitheads who watched it and said "how damning of Maduro that he did not agree with her claim of 50 countries" or w/e

Longtime observers, however, say the generals doubt the promises will be kept. This is a major reason why the revolution isn’t moving as quickly as some had hoped when Guaido electrified the world on Jan. 23 with his declaration. This has led to impatience and finger-pointing. U.S. policy makers and those around Guaido -- as well as leaders in Brazil and Colombia -- are eyeing one another and worrying about failure. Officials in each camp have said privately they assumed the others had a more developed strategy.

it occurred to me that when richard branson is next trying to float a balloon into space someone will ask him at the press conference how he feels about helping to cause the venezuelan civil war. i can imagine him staring blankly at the reporter, the fluorescent light shining off his hair, as an aide waves for security. had to lay down for a bit after this vision.

defections increasing in frequency

edit: when they say "defecting", where are these people actually defecting to? i mean i presume being a cop is their sole source of income. do they just turn up at the precinct on monday but wearing a team guaido badge? if they're defecting "to the opposition" then who will pay them?

the CIA, probably spending the cash they seized from Venezuela. it's very efficient to unilaterally rob a country blind (for its own good!) and then spend that money on destroying it further (for its own good!)
