Ufuk_Surekli posted:if they're a "former anti-Assad unit", surely that ought to mean they're now pro-Assad (and therefore wouldn't prevent the government from governing the city)? how can you cease being anti-Assad but still be prepared to take up arms against his administration? or, is it that they were formerly, and are no longer, a unit - but remain opposed to Assad despite their de-unitization? whichever way you cut it, "former anti-Assad unit" is an audaciously stupid concept
maybe they do not even technically exist until measured with scientific instruments/mentioned in a news article, a bit like that cat in the box thing
-Israel accidentally admits it's been spending tons arming and aiding rebels
-Trump says USA is in the regime change game for the long haul
-SDF names their breakaway region the "Self-Administration of Northern & Eastern Syria"
i cant believe how stubborn the west is regarding their obviously failed invasion :/
Here's another one
Washington (CNN)Russia has warned the US military twice in the last week that its forces, along with Syrian regime units, are prepared to attack in an area where dozens of US troops are located, according to several US defense officials.
Russia claims that there are militants in the area protected by US troops.
Given its location near the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq, the At Tanf garrison is seen as a key strategic location as the US, Iran and Russia compete for influence in the region.

so this:
https://www.middleeasteye.net/columns/are-us-and-uk-empowering-al-qaeda-yemen-1513529836
note how even now they still can't resist framing it as "the guns fell into al qaeda's hands". frankly, there is no way that my government (UK) doesn't know exactly where the guns and tank killing RPGs we give to the saudis end up. as we all know, arming and financing al qaeda in yemen has been the west and saudi arabia's SOP from the go in yemen. there is no "endgame" here, either; the goal is to keep fuelling the chaos.
note, too, how the death toll is now creeping up. we all know western governments and media have been lying, and the figure of 10000-15000 deaths is an absolute joke three years into a war fought by an aggressor state that has used siege tactics, famine, and disease against a largely impoverished and defenseless civilian population. for whatever reason, someone somewhere has stopped caring as much about the real numbers leaking out. but still there's another really sick joke at play here: the suffering of the yemeni people is being covered as separate "humanitarian crises" which we are supposed to believe are occurring independently of the war. so if you died of cholera or malnutrition instead of as a direct result of a bombing run or a gunfight, you aren't included in the official death toll. a minimum of 50000 children have cholera and another 500000 - 1000000 people are at risk of starvation, and none of them are considered combat casualties per se. this is awfully convenient isn't it. so the true figure of dead may never be known, and i can't convey how angry and powerless i feel knowing my own government is openly supporting what amounts to a genocide. again.
one last point: saudi arabia's performance in this conflict has been a complete embarrassment, and i have a hunch this is creating more than a little friction with their western military and security advisors. pampered aristocrats dropping fire from thousands of feet in the sky, supported by the best training and targeting specialists NATO states can provide, still can't take a country defended by a volunteer guerrilla army. as psychotic as most CIA and US military personnel are, you have to believe this, coupled with having to arm and train and fund an organization the US is officially at war with, is burning some of them up inside. oh well. i suppose it'll provide fuel for some tell-all memoirs 30 years from now.
now to syria:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-45444276
so here i figure one thing scaring turkey is the idea that 1000s of jihadis, guys their security services have been training and arming and promising the world to, might end up streaming across the border into turkey when idlib is retaken by the SAA. it's a certainty they'll be feeling betrayed and looking to vent on the state that failed to protect them.
a couple of classics from the guardian, who have been busily running interference for these same groups. here they've fired the first shot of the inevitable "we must do something" barrage of propaganda we're about to be hit with:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/sep/07/millions-idlib-death-world-platitudes
this "anonymous source" doesn't ask much, just that the US bombs the fuck out of russian positions in the area and triggers world war 3 to protect al qaeda.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/sep/07/kurds-renew-their-claim-for-idlib-as-final-battle-draws-near
now, i know this forum is 50/50 on the ypg, so i'll admit i am a supporter but that i don't care to get into all that. i'm just gonna highlight this extremely weird section:
With that fight now largely over, the SDF remain bitter at being ousted earlier this year from the town of Afrin in Idlib by Turkish-led Arab forces who had been raised to fight Assad.
"ousted" is a weird way to describe ethnic cleansing, and "turkish-led arab forces" is an even weirder way to describe an array of turkish-backed jihadi militias, many of them former ISIS fighters, who raped and murdered their way into afrin and have now created a totalitarian fiefdom where the progressive policies of the YPG have been banned, anybody expressing a desire for their return is tortured or executed, and children are required to pray to erdogan every morning. also not mentioned: that the white helmets have returned to afrin after the YPG forced them out. funny that.
oh, and some of the 800 white helmets "evacuated" from syria came from idlib. if you're a civilian trying to leave the same area right now, you'll be killed for being a traitor and assadist. hmm.

the YPG have had to be diplomatic about the white helmets when giving interviews to western media, but they kicked them out of afrin in 2015, long before the rumours about the WHs' true affiliations started trickling into mainstream western coverage.
and the white helmets themselves back it up:
After two and a half years of prohibition, the #SyrianCivilDefense returned to work in the Syrian city of #Afrin to serve all Syrians. The #PYD and #YPJ closed the center and arrested the volunteers who were working there, to come back today and be with the residents. pic.twitter.com/32OHmLBvzN

it's well known what the takfiri groups did to retake afrin. "war crimes" is putting it mildly. even if people buy the horseshit "volunteer aid workers" branding, they have to explain why the white helmets only ever pop up in areas under the control of al qaeda and its affiliates. then they have to explain why the actually leftist YPG marched them out of town at gunpoint while allowing other syrian aid workers to operate in afrin without problems. what was it about the WH that spooked the kurds so much?

this is the perfect example of wikileaks having good and interesting content, with infuriating and counterproductive presentation. the bit immediately before the highlight is about israel preferring assad as a 'known quantity' and fretting about what happens if syria falls to jihadists. but the sensational quote is pulled and presented as if it's a smoking gun. i guess assange is a real journalist after all?
