It's his contempt for anyone who is not in academia that bothers me, as being in academia has made me respect it less rather than more. In his case it is surely symptomatic of his own mediocrity as a scholar and tenuous existence, as he consistently shills his own books and blogs as a way to self-promote outside the strict standards of scholarship in the court of public opinion. A real communist should seek to demystify the obscurity of academic standards of research, show how its institutions serve to destroy radical thought and make the working class doubt its own mastery of scientific knowledge, and use one's position to support class intellectuals. His attitude, which is consistent and not merely that one post provoked by this forum, is the opposite and reveals a typical petty-bourgeois attitude towards the working class with a particularly cynical twist in an age when academia is no longer capable of serving as a shelter from proletarianization for petty-bourgeois intellectuals who seek to become the safe, controlled voice of the proletarian masses.
