leftist entryism has failed every other time, but maybe it'll work in the DSA this time guys. because i really want it to? guys? guys?? MODS?!
#5
doing the work to create a power base of our own sounds really hard. how about we just show up to an organization opposed to our political interests and ask really nicely for them to unconditionally give us all their support and resources? what could go wrong?
#6
not surprised but i would also like to hear more concrete details on this gossip

I agree Shrieking Violet, I'm not in the DSA. Apparently they had some NEC meeting and they're trying to change some provision that does something like banning members in "self-described democratic centralist orgs" to just banning members in "democratic centralist orgs." Basically empowering them to be able to ban anyone they consider to be in a "democratic centralist org." So allegedly that's going to basically mean most of the people in LA and Boston and one other place I forget, maybe Philly, are going to be banned.
#8
They had a consultative vote in favor of it but that's not binding because it's a constitutional change.

To provide some background on this the Constitution of the DSA has forbidden dual-card membership in DSA and demcen orgs since, as far as I know, Harrington founded the org. National is attempting to counter many local branches who have openly declared they will not follow this clause, and who have been registering many members of these types of organizations since the election boom. The main, and as far as I know the only, body organized inside DSA to disband this clause is the Refoundation Caucus, a mix of trots, eurocoms and left demsocs, some of whom are in other demcen orgs, largely the trot org Socialist Alternative as well as CPUSA. It looks to be a potentially hot button issue come the next Congress/Convention.

In that case, I think it's good that the DSA will be expelling every registered Democrat from its ranks
#13
well, dems arent a demcen org so its really just a stick to beat the org's left wing

e: sorry you probably understood this already my bad. not operating on a lot of sleep

I love hearing about bylaws and org constitution dickery. Anyone know the DSA's process for constitutional revisions? Should probably be pretty easy for them to justify tightening up the language of a rule that already exists to most of the membership. It would be funny if they managed to fuck up and couldn't get the support they needed for the change, though realistically that still wouldn't actually stop them from getting rid of anyone they wanted gone.

Yeah, the other thing I heard was that at the last meeting of something called the NPC they were discussing how to purge Refoundation entirely. Violet mentioned entryism but the line I'm hearing is that a lot of these people weren't even entryists, they just joined the org and then upon reading books figured out the correct line, which is why Dem Cops of America want to purge them. Supposedly an informal 9-5 vote was taken to pursue this course of action.

in the past I've personally rewritten the bylaws of an org to deal with something similar (rightist bro sabotage entryism through uncontested seats) and it'll be interesting to watch a larger org deal with a more entrenched opposition, even if they're worthless.

e: feel bad for those poor souls getting purged just for having good politics who wasted their time with the DSA, learning the same lesson as those before them too late for the billionth time

rewrite the bylaws of your org to ensure sufficient emphasis is put on buliding up heavy industry and the focus is not repeat not on building up light industry

The Refoundation Caucus local I am in is pretty large and active and the people in it probably do the majority of the work in the DSA local in general--I get the sense this is the case in many other larger locals. Honestly it is exhausting keeping up with all of the "courtly intrigue" but while there seem to be a lot of seasoned ISO trots in Refoundation it also seems like there's a lot of people newer to socialism who just want to have, you know, an actual socialist org, as Parenti mentions. I feel like it is unlikely Refoundation would be purged because it would cripple many large locals, and I'm sure would basically just create a new org competing for recruits. In my local as I would imagine in many others, there's a bunch of Our Revolution people, and I know for a fact that during onboarding they have overtly tried to steer newer members to OR work. Which pretty clearly shows that both 1. the right doesn't actually care about entryism, it just cares about anti-communism (this is so obvious it probably didn't need to be said) and 2. if a purge or schism did happen, the DSA would go back to being a Dem front group for supporting progressive candidates and Meidner plan reading group, pretty much exclusively, which I guess some more cynical people would say it already is.

I'll note that a lot of the rightists are from the same waves of new recruits as the people in the RC--the decrepit old socdems who have been there since 2016 are tiny and powerless (see the BDS convention vote and removal of Fetonte), so I think looking at this through a lens of entryism is misleading; it's more two groups of newly politically active people competing over the carcass of a 70s era socialist org.

an organization of that scale and hype, with little to no enforceable accountability structures and a confused whatever you want it to be smear of broad appeal, i think goes beyond slight concern and reaches guaranteed certainty that a bunch of abusive shitstains are going to exploit it

Yeah i read books. and get purged

getting purged by the feckless squirming maggot people is a right of passage into political adulthood

Speaking of gossip wasn't there some sexual harassment thing going on in Portland or LA or something with the DSA where the abuser was being covered up?
