at the end of Poltergeist the family moves out of the home they bought and rents a hotel room. but is this change a constructive *snrk* movement forward into a better future, or is it fleeing from their responsibility for the literal corpses of the past? thees, i claim,
A local historian described this as "One of the most audacious acts in the whole series of predatory aggressions by the Indians in this township" and I got a good laugh out of that

Now tribal leadership runs a casino on the reservation, though, so they've been working to de-recognize those descendants of slaves one by one so there's a bigger portion of casino earnings each year per member. This has been presented by the news press as a Tough Problem Where No One's Right, except it happened because the white supremacist United States tried to offload reparations for slavery onto another group of people they enslaved and ethnically cleansed lol.

all that sounds great to me. i wasn't trying to take any position in the larger conversation, i just have a tic that kicks in whenever i see a conversation discuss the native genocide without mentioning that most of the indigenous nations are still alive and kicking

is this also the tribe that famously wrecked the kkk?

swampman posted:Like I say, selective enforcement: in my neighborhood I know a building where FDNY shows up every few months and pounds on the door for a bit and all the neighbors, we're talkin like 30-40 illegal units with 2-4 tenants each, know not to answer. FDNY has no official proof the building is inhabited and they don't try hard to get it. Try squatting in an empty building for 1 day and FDNY+NYPD will kick their way in to remove you. It's also easy to get away with illegal construction on country property, until you start doing something (like housing lots of homeless) that catches official notice.
for whatever reason i always assumed this was only applicable to "public" buildings or rentals, and if it was a private use residence then there would be no rules like this, but i guess i just imagined this
wasn't even looking for this stuff, just came up when sourcing settlers

This thread would be so cool. Counties or whatever could just be submitted anonymously on a google doc or something idk.

President Donald Trump told Sen. Orrin Hatch on Friday that he would approve a recommendation to trim the boundaries of the Bears Ears National Monument, Hatch’s office said.
Friday’s news came just a day after the National Wildlife Federation posted a new video campaign in support of Bears Ears, prominently featuring Navajo Nation delegate Davis Filfred, who pleads with Trump to affirm the monument.
“Mr. President, we know you love America and her heritage,” Filfred says in the 30-second video segment. “Our national monuments protect that heritage for future generations. If you destroy these monuments, our public lands could be auctioned off. Our sacred tribal sites would be in danger.”
pretty sure that's the point...
Approached by reporters at an event in Salt Lake City on Friday, Hatch said Trump “told me Bears Ears would be the way I said it should be,” though he offered no details on the size. Hatch also said Trump will modify the Grand Staircase to allow coal mining in the Kaiparowits Plateau.

stegosaurus posted:The alternative is giving the money to orgs or prisoners probably. Renting is a lot cheaper than buying and maintaining a house. So it’s not just a choice of where to shunt an equal amount of money for an equivalent thing. Anyway I’m sorry I brought it up.
It's good that you brought it up, because, I have been researching to see if there's some "third way" that combines the best elements of buying a house with renting one, and https://www.biggerpockets.com/renewsblog/2013/11/02/hack-housing-get-paid-live-free/
Don’t be scared of homes that are a little “ugly” or have been foreclosed on. Although they may require a few weekends of painting with your buddies – you can often get substantial discounts because everyone else is scared away. In fact, my favorite feature in any property I am considering is the smell. The worse, the better. Why? Because smell is the easiest and cheapest thing to fix (usually just by installing new carpet and re-painting) but drives 99% of home buyers from even considering the deal.
