No shade but this analysis reminds me of the computer painting of the guy whos locked up in a giant fidget spinner used as shackles, which is meant to shock you and make you think, wow i think im having fun with my spinny toy but im basically a slave to it.
Also, people are gonna like animals no matter what, and I don't think animal interaction satisfies the same needs as human-to-human interaction except in people with messed up brains. But even the messedup people are important, as i argued in my Rhizzone front page article about how furries = lumpenproletariatm,

I think instrumental descriptions of pets as straightforward proxies for children or as a distracting hobby are oversimplifications. It seems to tie into the larger relationship that people have with nature which has been an admiration or at least awe of it for most of human history but which the same historical development inevitably destroys (not just physically but also its pristine 'natureness'). There has been an essential significance which people perceive in their relationship with animals which used to at least marginally coexist with the development of economic relations but which has become almost completely untenable, and pets seem to be a tragic compromise like parks etc. for a contradiction that has never been resolved between man's desire for an experience of nature which his own development inevitably destroys. If anything is more directly a functional proxy its activists who are obsessed with animal rights, who can finally perceive the destruction wrought by capitalist production but only when it's happening in a metaphorical way to subjects that aren't actually human beings.
