The US has dropped what has been described as the largest non-nuclear bomb in the country’s arsenal on an area of eastern Afghanistan known to be populated by Isis-affiliated militants.

The Pentagon said the strike was the first time the 21,000lb weapon had been used in combat operations.

A spokesperson for the US Department of Defence confirmed to The Independent that a MC-130 aircraft dropped a GBU-43 bomb at 7pm local time.

The weapon is known in the US Air Force by its nickname MOAB, or "mother of all bombs". MOAB stands for massive ordinance air blast.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the US had used a “large, powerful and accurately-delivered weapon” to disrupt the movements of militants in the country.

Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said the bomb was dropped on a cave complex believed to be used by fighters affiliated to Isis in the Achin district of Nangarhar, close to the border with Pakistan.

The Pentagon said the mission had been in the planning stages for months. However, they "did not have the information" on whether the mission was being planned during the previous Obama administration.

Tl;Dr we are bombing Afghanistan (again), this time with weapons with a mile blast radius in areas with 95k civilians.

Are you in an org yet, and if so, have you protested the Syria or Afghanistan or Iraq bombings? Why or why not?

How many people do you think that bomb just killed?

Is it gonna come out that the US just blew up 5000 people or something?
#7
with the mother of all bombs now dead, lets hope that there will be no more bombs born
#8
apparently the strike was at least in part a retaliation for a (1) US soldier killed a few days ago

The fact that the U.S. dropped the MOAB in the same province where De Alencar was killed is probably not a coincidence, said Bill Roggio, of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

“There might have been a degree of payback here as well,” Roggio told Military Times. “There’s certainly nothing wrong with that, especially if you’re killing your enemy.”

This provocation may be due to the mujahideen and dawla advancing on several fronts in Afghanistan over the last two years. Has been largely ignored or glossed over on the bourgeois media. War media has been covering it extensively though, with increasing panic. If the Americans withdraw it would be same scenario as after the Soviet withdrawal, in fact the current comprador state would probably fall a lot faster than the PDPA. A large factor being that Pakistan would welcome it's end.

The maps posted on these articles are quite accurate. The conclusion is that the mujahideen control or contest around a 100 of Afghanistans 400 or so districts, 30-40 percent of the total remaining population, and have in effect encircled several major cities. The situation is dire for empire.

I don't think the US government cares much if their puppets in Kabul win, and in fact I'm sure they're banking on a future collapse in much the same way they did in Iraq. The goal seems to be endless fragmentary chaos, where the US can turn over huge amounts of money building up some of the infrastructure they've annihilated, loot some resources then after a decade or so allow they political situation to collapse and do it all over again. The Pentagon was 100% aware of ISIS's impending invasion of Iraq and judged it strategically favourable. Obama allowed ISIS to ravage Iraq and weaken its government even further and de facto Balkanise the Sunni areas, only intervening when the Kurds (their oil clients) were threatened. I can only imagine a similar goal in Afghanistan.

Yeah US imperialism's strategy in the region has always been "if we don't get what we want, let chaos reign so noone else can have it" and then you can kickstart the military industry complex to keep the chaos going

i don't see how this is anything other than trump spittling out "what's the biggest bomb we have?!?!" in a meeting (are they still called meetings if they're just following him around at a resort)

seems like all the upper brasses of various arms of government (pun accidental but enjoyable) have figured out how to get what they want from him now. gonna be an exciting 4 (8?) years

just been watching CNN and i dont know what everyone is freaking out about because apparently the big bomb just went on isis.

it's actually kind of amazing how casually all the mainstream western news outlets discuss the MOAB being intended as a 'message' to DPRK or whoever. yeah i have no doubt that's true just as hiroshima and nagasaki were messages to the world as well, but god damn these 'experts' and journalists are shameless. like "mmm well the bomb, which is extremely big and deadly, sends a big message at this important time, and that's good." just die. i don't care how. please, die

With this escalation aparently indicating Trump is giving the military more of a free hand, i cant help but wonder which utah city they'll drop on Afganistan next

It's quite possible that the CIA initially built the tunnels that the MOAB destroyed for the mujahedeen

fuck yeah Scahill. its cool that occasionally a journo can come on and actually hold the mainstream media's feet to the fire a bit. I remember watching CNN the night of the tomahawks. it was disgusting to watch. these ex-generals were in breathless anticipation of the coming rain of weapons.

scahill also refused to attend an event against the war on syria because mother agnes was going to be speaking as well. anti-war liberalism is a land of contrasts
