This is a bit from Sanyal's theory of capitalist development's shadowy other - the wasteland. Won't go into the entire theory because it's fairly tedious but something he said made me uncomfortable for days. He says that in developing countries the need economy (informal economy, landless laborers) exists and is fed by turning some of capitalist production's surplus in making those rendered value-less survive. It was hard for me to find concrete empirical examples because it's never so straightforward but certainly the inkling that many of us constantly live in the dread of not having anything to bring to the market (not being able to participate with one's labor power because nobody wants it) - that idea stuck with me. I guess that's a threat that a lot of Humanities folks feel in American academia and in that sense while Sanyal's dead, as informalization increases in developed world and when "machines take over" the wasteland will expand.
