The sudden and severe immigration restrictions imposed on passport holders from seven Muslim countries could seriously demonstrate the law of unintended consequences. The president wants to restrict some Muslims but the effect could be to damage America's most important and profitable sector: technology.

Google has recalled around 100 of its affected staff from overseas. Microsoft has warned its shareholders that curbs on immigration could have a material impact on its business.

The technology sector relies heavily on highly skilled and well-paid workers from overseas on H1-B visas. If there's a risk, however small, that that brainpower could be restricted in some way or scare off others who may feel unwelcome, the big tech companies may have to rethink where they place their key staff in future.

always felt like the common cyberpunk trope of mega-corps replacing the state (in neuromancer, iirc, the usa is a rump state effectively replaced by corporate blocs in 'the sprawl') fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between capital and the state. capital needs the state strong to enforce its will. gibson should read more lenin is what i'm saying.

thousands of people showed up to shut down multiple major airports across the country today. i'm willing to bet most were young, and i think the ruling class is going to regret letting trump energize this cohort & give them practical experience of (provisional, contingent, w/e) successful resistance. make accelerationism great again.

the top of the opinion article "most read" list right now on the Washington Post site is an op-ed by a "Venezuelan economist" living in Madrid explaining that Chavez was like Trump and giving his handy tips to get rid of Trump, which is kind of like the dinosaurs giving advice on what to do if a comet hits Earth. not going to post any of it because it's all complete ass but nice to see the Post's reaction to a liberal-enraging right-wing government is to continue to attack a socialist who died four years ago, from behind a paywall (that I found out can be completely circumvented by running an ad blocker against their pop-up, then doing select all, copy, paste). nice because they're working hard to make sure the class that subscribes to the Post loses what remains of their connection to reality.

The Democrats are talking impeachment proceedings, I guess all the impeachment documentation is still being spiral bound at the copy shop. They really just want Bannon out of the White House and Trump to stand up to the barbaric regimes that created this refugee crisis while returning to our normal, give-us-your-poor border control policies.

The organizers tried to get the crowd to chant in Spanish and maybe 10% of the audience knew enough Spanish to participate. After chants of "no ban, no wall" I remarked that if you've been to the border in the last eight years, you'd see we have a wall there already, this made people angry at me. Someone told me I "have a lot of opinions" which, despite neatly summarizing my entire personality, was not a very productive point. I am really starting to understand what happened to Proyect's brain over the years.
