alan woods, the editor of that trotsky book, got involved in venezuela and tried to convince chavez that trotskyism was great. chavez appeared to be closest to some other theorists that saw socialism as a regulatory system (as opposed to simple nationalization), so woods wrote a book basically trying to demolish this alternative. i can't remember it that clearly, there is stuff like imagined conversations with bill gates. in a strange quirk, his ideas have a small but notable current in the pakistan people's party, a meeting of which is where malala was speaking to in that pic we all love.

well, actually, louis conradt, the guy who killed himself, didn't show up to the TCAP Trap House, or else they would have arrested him on the spot and he probably wouldn't have gotten the chance to kill himself. instead, they were gonna arrest him based off the chatlogs alone, so the cops went to his house, he heard them coming, and killed himself before they could arrest him. he was a District Attorney, btw, which is why dateline bothered to be on hand for all this. normally the dudes who took the bait for chat but didn't go to the house just got quiet police visits without the dateline crew bothering to tag along since they wouldn't be able to interview the chimos before arrest in this scenario

the way it was explained to me is that because Dateline (and now Crime Watch Daily for the new version) are technically news programs and because the guys are being arrested afterwards, it is considered "news" and therefore the normal rules for showing their likenesses don't apply

im not sure if that's precisely correct but i do know these guys aren't consenting to sign releases so they're getting around that somehow. some of the dudes (notably the rabbi that they caught in one of the early stings) have even tried unsuccessfully to sue NBC to keep their segment from airing
