tl;dr - the "split" of the mid-50s effectively purged the ALP of any true leftists whether they were affilated with the communists or not, whitlam was the last gasp of whatever principles the party still had, he achieved some great things (though shameful on indonesia) which is why he was put down like a rabid dog. since then the ALP has known its place which is why they were happy to be led by hawke/keating into introducing harder line neoliberal reforms than even howard would have dared.
