space is fine
cars posted:actually deadken's position is that educating people about science is grueling, difficult and worthwhile which is why the darlings of western science education don't do it.
his article about that was really funny because he described tyson and the i fucking love science crew in terms that apply directly and exactly to his politics
once China's space program really kicks into gear we'll probably have some cool shit to talk about. hopefully they'll be able to cut off the states' efforts to militarize space.

control of satellites is an extremely significant military asset, and gatekeeping access to satellite communications is a potent way to enforce economic dominance over a region

GLONASS
e: also pretend i wrote "the direct military applications of manned space flight e.g. grabbing soviet satellites and flying back to Vandenberg with them or doing a nice lazy orbit and dropping a nuke directly on moscow without alerting soviet early warning radars which are looking for missiles on suborbital trajectories" both of which were stupid and unworkable ideas but convinced the USAF to back NASA up when they went panhandling at the Senate in 70s. also the ussr had tons of their own spy and communications satellites wtf

Just another reason why communism rules and capitalism drools
shriekingviolet posted:the soviet space program was good but under capitalism space research is just camouflaged military research and bickering extensions of US hegemony, with a dash of the foibles of eccentric rich twits and the remnants of cold war capitalist "progress" propaganda. its important to remember the context of western people caring and thinking about space has been forcibly tied to cold war sentiments and western chauvinism. under current conditions most space science sucks, people who care about space suck, and the cold vacuum of space sucks. in the west the stance of opposing space serves the purpose of opposing the west's colonialist narrative of the conquest of space and its use as a logistical space for western military and economic force projection.

this, basically. Chinas space program is really cool and they're going the moon & beyond while capitalism pretends the stars dont exist
