Local councils, public bodies and even some university student unions are to be banned by law from boycotting “unethical” companies, as part of a controversial crackdown being announced by the Government.

Under the plan all publicly funded institutions will lose the freedom to refuse to buy goods and services from companies involved in the arms trade, fossil fuels, tobacco products or Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Any public bodies that continue to pursue boycotts will face “severe penalties”, ministers said.

Senior government sources said they were cracking down on town-hall boycotts because they “undermined good community relations, poisoned and polarised debate and fuelled anti-Semitism”.

the British government "remained firm in its view that the imposition of sanctions would be unconstitutional 'because we do not accept that this situation in South Africa constitutes a threat to international peace and security and we do not in any case believe that sanctions would have the effect of persuading the South African Government to change its policies'."

BDS was a dead-end anyway, it only resulted in a few symbolic gestures by unis and even originally in South Africa it was materially ineffectual.

This is actually the best result that BDS could hope for, publicly showing the comically evil complicity of Western governments and Israeli Jewry.

This is a naked absurdity. How can you actually prevent someone from "refusing to buy" something? A mandate to purchase Israeli goods, with attendant tax penalties? An automated compulsory purchasing program? People "refuse to buy" billions of items every single day, but if you do so for the wrong reason, then it's criminal. It's the motive, not the action, that counts.

well if the Palestine movement had taken your advice to begin with and given up on BDS then the UK would have never felt the need to resort to this and expose themselves.

BDS should be boycotting anything with a hechsher stamp. Part of the price of everything in a grocery store goes to zionist fanatics. But go ahead and pick that Florida orange over the Jaffa, and keep believing you did something meaningful today.

Brands to avoid include Ahava, Jaffa oranges, Sabra and Tribe hummus and SodaStream.
