Fox Lake cop stole from youth program, shot himself: officialsUpending the portrayal of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz as a hero tragically cut down in the line of duty as he neared retirement, authorities on Wednesday said the Fox Lake officer died in a suicide he staged as it became clear he could face consequences for years of alleged theft.

Gliniewicz, 52, shot himself in a "carefully staged suicide" designed to look like a murder as it became clear that his "extensive criminal acts" could come to light during a review of village finances and practices, said George Filenko, commander of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. Prosecutors, meanwhile, are continuing to investigate possible crimes by others that were revealed during the probe into the officer's death.

Gliniewicz ran the village's Explorer youth police training program and he had been stealing money from it for some seven years, Filenko said. Gliniewicz stole an amount in the five figures and used the money for personal expenses, including mortgage payments, travel and adult websites, Filenko said.

The lieutenant, a heavily tattooed Army veteran known to many as "G.I. Joe," mentored many youths through the Explorers, and some observers portrayed his death as evidence of an escalating war on police.

More than $300,000 has been spent on the investigation into the unsolved shooting death of a Fox Lake police lieutenant, according to a review of personnel records from 50 suburban Chicago police agencies.

...

Despite a wide search and a month of detective work, police haven't made any arrests, identified any suspects or come up with a possible motive.

...

The review found that 283 people from 50 suburban Chicago police departments and sheriff's offices were involved in the first three weeks after the shooting, either assisting in the investigation or covering shifts for others.

nota bene:

it's interesting how quickly the authorities of this undoubtedly corrupt and regressive municipality have closed ranks in condemnation of this real bad apple.

so much so that early in the investigation, a retired chicago cop called the coroner and threatened to murder him and several others unless he provided everyone the needed closure by ruling the cop's death a suicide.

however, i am sure that the lascivious details and sham marriages which the police are bravely breaking their code of silence to bring to light are NOT intended to distract anyone from looking more deeply into the systemic ways in which the police as an institution are deeply integrated into vast networks of criminalality due to their role in class society

but cops don't have those monthly weed expenses since they can smoke what they confiscate in states where it's still illegal
