The Western powers, apparently attempting to intimidate Putin and justify escalation of its own military involvement , really wants the incident to be construed as terrorist "blowback" to Russia's aid to Syria, while Moscow itself remains officially undecided for now. Egypt, on the other hand, have declared there is not evidence of the crash being caused by a bomb:

"U.S. officials have told CNN that intelligence suggests that ISIS or its affiliates planted a bomb on the Russian plane, which broke apart in midair, killing all 224 people on board. The flight was heading from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Those officials stressed that no formal conclusion has been reached by the U.S. intelligence community and that U.S. officials haven't seen forensic evidence from the crash investigation.

But the intelligence also suggests someone at the Sharm el-Sheikh airport helped get a bomb onto the plane, one U.S. official said.

"This airport has lax security. It is known for that," the official said. "But there is intelligence suggesting an assist from someone at the airport."

But Egyptian Civil Aviation Minister Hossam Kamel said officials have found no evidence to support the theory that a bomb caused the plane to crash."

This points to a sudden rupture and decompression of the plane after which it disintegrated and fell down. The cause of such ruptures can be manifold. Metal fatigue or faulty repairs are a frequent cause (see Japan Airlines Flight 123). As the plane's tail separated from the main cell a tail strike the plane suffered years ago might be relevant. A turbine blade may have cracked and hit the nacelle at a critical point (see Delta Air Lines Flight 1288). A Lithium ion rechargeable battery pack in some luggage in the rear luggage hold may have exploded (see UPS Airlines Flight 6).

The Islamic State claimed it had something to do with the downing of the plane but that announcement was unusual as it contained zero evidence. Other Islamic State attacks were announced with video or other evidence of its misdeeds. Here the Islamic State might just piggyback on a mere technical accident."

US spies and officials gloat in a completely-not-suspicious-at-all manner about how the airline incident may draw Russia deeper into the war in Syria:

Less attention has focused on the 2004 crash of an Egyptian Flash Air Boeing 737 charter flight after takeoff from Sharm El Sheikh. Once the cockpit voice recorder was recovered from that wreckage, Egyptian investigators barred their U.S. counterparts from participating in the initial download of information, according to people familiar with the details.
